Yup, the Marinsky played it here a couple of weeks ago and sure enough, the audience fell into the trap. What was more interesting was the battle of wills between the audience & Gergiev at the end of the piece. Folks tried to applaud before he lowered his arms & he stood his ground.

an open string (= an unstopped/unfingered string) will ring out little more than a stopped one and runs the risk of standing out a bit relative to the other notes, especially the highest string on the violin- the E- it can be a bit shrill.

solo violin only? the repertoire is no where near as extensive as for solo piano, although Ysaye has written 6 sonatas for solo violin... it has quotes of the Bach.
