It no longer surprises me, but it used to, that so many people like or dislike a piece of music when, from what they say about it, they haven't really listened to it at all, not attentively enough to hear what's going on in it. I have to admit that it's much more difficult for me to make allowances for Levine than it is for, say, Wagner or Karajan. I wonder if this is strictly because he's contemporaneous...or if there's something else going on in my head. Have to think more about it...but I can't imagine I'm the only one....

I've always loved his piano pieces and chamber music. And for a time in undergrad he was my favorite composer. :D There's just something so....delightful about his pieces, if not always profound. Long live Felix!
