That's true.

I moved to Eugene from D.C. just before he performed St. Matthew's Passion at Kennedy Center.

The gods (or should I say, God?) must have been against me--such an unpleasant coincidence.

There are many fine films that have used music in considerably more thoughtful and poignant ways than most contemporary music videos: I am thinking of Rach's second piano concerto in David Lean's Brief Encounter. Or Bergman's use of Chopin's Mazurka 4 in A minor in Cries and Whispers. And even that ...

Thanks! Faure? Interesting. So is there a Faure sonata on which Proust based the "little phrase" of Swann? "...below the delicate line of the violin-part, slender but robust, compact and commanding, he had suddenly become aware of the mass of the piano-part beginning to emerge in a sort of liquid ri...

You should totally watch Ingmar Bergman's rendering of the Magic Flute. The Criterion Collection has a great transfer.

The shortest of the three ladies is totally hot!

And the dragon-monster in the beginning is totally cool!

You might also like Beethoven's Fidelio-yo!

Yeah, Vinteuil from Proust. We he a real composer or did Proust make him up? What's the deal?

THANKS! :-D

I would imagine so--Pythagoras was one of the original gangstas. I read that he sacrificed an ox when he discovered the square on the hypotenuse of a right triangle to be equal to the sum of the squares on it's sides.

But seriously, is any of the classical philosophy of music worth reading?

Pythagoras

For who does not know that Pythagoras calmed a drunk adolescent of Taormine who had become incited under the infuence of the Phrygian mode, and that Pythagoras further restored this boy to his rightful senses, all by means of a spondaic melody? Does the spondaic melody really do this? Would it help ...

I was probably thinking of Ocean's Twelve. By the way, Does anyone else like the way the doorkeeper says "Johann Sebastian Bach" in Bergman's "The Silence"?
