Re: New Elektra with Gergiev Conducting on LSO Live !

My experience of Gergiev in Strauss has been worse than underwhelming. I saw his Salome with the Kirov in Melbourne about 8 years ago and it was the worst operatic performance that I have ever attended – mostly attributable to the conductor. To be fair I also attended the Kirov’s The Fiery Angel a c...

José, I'm having problems getting to the operas you refer to at the Sydney Opera House site. Can you send me an active URL that gets me there quickly? ¡Gracias! Re: A gift from down under: soprano Emma Matthews

I have followed Emma Matthews since her 1993 debut here (then Emma Lysons). She is a superb singer and a committed actress. She is one of the few singers that I have seen/heard who can triumph in the 4 soprano roles (in a single performance) of Hoffman - including that other Australian soprano.  I w...

Elizabeth Connell had a long association with Opera Australia; as far back as the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973. I saw her many times; particularly memorable was the roles that she sang for the Mackerras Janacek cycle (The Kostelnika, Kabanicha), her Wagner, strauss and (most recently) T...

In opera you are expected to applaud after every big musical number Not really. Applause during an operatic scene can break the dramatic flow of the work and some composers deliberately composed transitional pieces immediately following a “hit” aria to keep the drama flowing. A good example is Cala...

The FA that Gergiev brought to a Melbourne Festival about 10 year ago is one of my greatest artistic experiences. Agreed, that performance was mind blowing ........... unfortunately the Salome that Gergiev/Kirov served up at the same festival (2001) was a total disaster. Stil, it was worth the airf...

No, I'm sure it's the lack of interest among singers and conductors, and of demand from the opera audience, that's why Meyerbeer's operas are so rarely taken off the shelf. Every decade or so, a major opera house will venture one of the most famous operas, and achieve artistic success with it - the...

Giacomo Meyerbeer -- In the 1830s and 1840s, he was arguably the most famous and successful composer in the world. Today, he is a virtual unknown, even to many people who consider themselves classical music buffs. They may have heard of his name, but none of his music. He does live on in various th...

Failing that, the artists could make copies of their own from the CDs or whatever. I doubt that an artist could legally use a commercially released CD as the master for re-releases of their own work. Copyright also exists for the re-engineered masters that were made to produce CDs. The copyright ge...

When I first started to seriously collect recordings (about 40 years ago) I bought a lot of HvK material – in the past 20 years or so very little with him at the helm. I think a problem with “label” conductors like HvK (DGG), Solti (Decca), Ormandy and Szell (CBS) etc is that they are forced to cove...

I certainly remember Mary Hopkin.
