Re: I am creating a personal "list," - need your feedback!
If I may... it is pronounced "Shao" (the "ao" should sound like "ow"). :D The first xiao and second xiao are pronounced slightly differently but the tonal differences are difficult to describe with letters. Thank you Henry! In fact, the first Xiao and the second Xiao are pronounced exactly the same...

xiaopv= Xiao Xiao No, I do not have the same first name and last name. They look the same in English but not in Chinese. The English version of a Chinese name only tells you how to read but not the meaning. One pronunciation can correspond to as many as 100 Chinese characters. This is my Chinese nam...

Re: If you are a "collector" and ...
Do you have any comments on those "last" recordings of Arrau? How do they affect you? After a cup of coffee, it just come to me that you meant the exact Philips's last session, the 7 discs set. I have heard five discs. (I try to buy the original paper box edition and it is not easy) One Schubert, t...

Re: If you are a "collector" and ...
I haven't heard a great deal of Arrau playing chamber music but undoubtedly it exists. There is an early recording of Beethoven Violin Sonatas. The partner was Szigeti. Don't ask me how it is because I haven't heard it. Other chamber music that I know are Mozart's Piano Quartet(M&A) and Piano Trio(...

Re: If you are a "collector" and ...
Do you have any comments on those "last" recordings of Arrau? How do they affect you? Every so often, I was trying to find the answer to this question: do I like his earlier recording better or the later recording better? I ended up in a dilemma. I guess it just depends on the pieces. I have some f...

Re: If you are a "collector" and ...
I am a fan of Claudio Arrau and I want to collect ALMOST every one of his recording available on CD. Philips, EMI, Marston, BBC, M&A, Dante, Naxos, Vanguard, etc... I say almost because I don't collect pirated recording. (Usually they are published by some small companies. I am not sure if this is w...

Re: How to clean sponge markings?
We just had a discussion about this on GMG--the solution our distraught poster found worked for him was to soak the discs in distilled water, then the foam bits came off easily with gentle cleaning (soft, moist cloth, wiping radially only, please, from center hole to circumference). Thanks for the ...

Chalkperson: I remember reading some posts somewhere saying that it is more important to protect the label side than the playing side since that is where the information stored.

How to clean sponge markings?
Some of my discs have a sponge marking problem. Early released box sets usually have a square sponge between two discs. (I guess that is to protect discs) But because of moist and temperature, sponges resolve, go bad and leave a serious marking on discs. I tried to use some mild hand soap and cotton...

I just ordered The Complete 78rpm Recording by Otto Klemperer at http://www.archiphon.de Archiphon is a small label in Germany that produces historic recording of Klemperer, Lipatti, Schuricht, etc. This label has stopped producing CDs since 2006, but luckily, this Klemperer's set is still available...

If you're specifically looking for classical music, don't go to AKA Music. I don't think they sell any classical. Unfortunately, there aren't any stores here with a real good classical selection. There are a few with small classical collections. One is on 13th Street, just north of Pine Street. Ano...

CD store in Philadelphia?
I am going to visit Philadelphia next Monday for the first time. Besides sightseeing and eating Chinese food, I would also like to visit some CD store. I am mainly looking for used (2nd handed) CD since they are usually cheap and I like collecting old versions of some recordings. Since I will only h...

I like to watch Claudio Abbado conducting a lot. He is so passionate. His gesture is elegant and spontaneous.
Check out his Mahler's No.2 on youtube. This is just the last few minutes of the last movement.

I think the big news here, with these new releases, is the OISTRAKH recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Anybody have any comments on Gieseking/EMI set and Schiff/Decca set? By hearing some samples of Schiff, he plays relatively faster than Gieseking. I just started to enjoy Schumann's piano work. Symphonic Etude is the first piece I tried and it caught me immediately. In my opinion, it definitely worth a trial. By the way, the one I have is by by Kempff.

Re: Which conductors do you like? Need some help...
Recently I have a chance to compare Wagner's orchestral excerpts by Karajan, Klemperer and Tennstedt. Klemperer is still my favourite in these pieces.Barry Z wrote: I'd say HvK was up there with Jochum as the two best Bruckner conductors on record. His Wagner orchestral excerpts on EMI are also classics.
