Jazz mp3's for you
Hi everyone, I uploaded a few mp3 tracks for my friends and thought I'd share with you all as well! They are from albums by Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt and Oscar Peterson. There are only six tracks right now, but I may start a rotation of favorite music ...

Re: What Is it About Wagner ?
The other day I mentioned reading a recent interview in Gramophone online with Sir John Eliot Gardiner on the thread here about his recent HIP Brahms recordings. The distinguished if rather opinionated conductor mentioned that he absolutely no desire ever to conduct Wagner, and that he found his mu...

Have you -heard- him? His recording of his 4th is amazing. It's the only recording that doesn't romanticize that first movement...(which was apparently intended to just be sharp, jagged and raw).slofstra wrote: I don't believe that RVW was regarded as a very good conductor, if I recall.

Generally, composers are catastrophic at conducting their own works. 8) Even Boulez - though not catastrophic at all - has at times been bettered, e.g. by David Robertson's recording of Rituel . Re: Vaugan Williams ... the SYMPHONIES
But you've got to hear Vaughan Williams conducting his own symphonies (spec. 4 and 5). A good composer does not necessarily equal a good conductor but I really like the idea of a composers presenting their own work: the ultimate/definitive view of a work? When I was 14 or so (only about 5 years ago!) I heard an old Boult recording of the 7th ('Sinfonia Antarctica') and was completely mesmerized. Bernstein was always sensitive to the feeling that he was more regarded as a conductor than a composer. He would ask fans if they would have respected him had he been a full-time composer.
