Have you -heard- him? His recording of his 4th is amazing. It's the only recording that doesn't romanticize that first movement...(which was apparently intended to just be sharp, jagged and raw).

Generally, composers are catastrophic at conducting their own works. 8) Even Boulez - though not catastrophic at all - has at times been bettered, e.g. by David Robertson's recording of Rituel .
