Re: New Mahler Complete Symphonies from Berlin Philharmonic's Own Label
Thanks Brian, fascinating. I agree about Szell's Mahler 4 - definitely my go-to version - and also Das Lied von der Erde. I have both Walter versions and, though the Ferrier one is more celebrated, in the end the Mildred Miller is even more satisfying. When I was a teenager, Bernstein and the NYPO ...

Re: New Mahler Complete Symphonies from Berlin Philharmonic's Own Label
I keep saying I won't buy Mahler sets, but I totally will. I already have to live until 120 or so to catch up on my listening queue. Bernstein/NYP my favorite but I become more and more partial to Bertini. Don't know Bertini, thanks for the tip. Oh the Bertini set is superb, it's well worth getting.

BTW, since this box does not include a complete recording of Mahler's Tenth, I'm still recommending Deryck Cooke's original orchestration as recorded by Eugene Ormandy for Columbia, the premiere of which I attended, and later had the opportunity to have my LP copy autographed by maestro Ormandy: ht...

I posted this mostly for our many lurkers who might want to participate in funding the great Berlin philharmonic's new label and acquire a fine introduction to Mahler's cycle. Hello Maestro Brian, I hope this message finds you well. You are very good, thanks for the thought. When you mentioned 'lur...

It IS very discouraging. Frankly, I would rather burn all my LPs than to let them go for a dollar, two, or three apiece. You might try the Japanese market. They are heavy into vinyl for classical music. Why vinyl hasn't taken the course of pop music for connoisseurs I do not know. But I must admit,...

On Chalkies recommendation I bought the Hungarian Quartet's box set of Beethoven string quartets, the performances hail from 1953. I listened to the String Quartet No 7 Op 59 No 1 and it is hugely enjoyable. I am looking forward to listening to the rest of this set. https://target.scene7.com/is/imag...

Well, the Dvorak IS the most popular and most often performed (at a guess), but the Shostakovich two are for me better pieces, with such concentrated energy. At this level, it's really impossible to rank, since these are all great works, but here comes a list: Dvorak Shostakovich Prokofiev (both ve...
