Re: Shura Cherkassky
About Shura.... I DID hear him a lot - over 40 times between 1977 and 1995. He was the most wonderfully idiosyncratic and unpredictable artist - one never knew how he would play any work, but it was always fresh and spontaneous. I always found it interesting that his favorite pianist was Argerich - ...

Re: Gary Graffman (pianist) oldies appearing again!
Graffman just appeared at the 2010 IKIF (International Keyboard Institute and Festival) at Mannes last month, and he performed for about 10 minutes (most of it was an interview and recordings/videos). He only plays LH rep these days, and he plays that rep very well indeed. He played the 2 Scriabin O...

Cant argue about Richter - if the Carnegie 1960 performances can be obtained, they are amazing (of 6 and 8 - I believe that they were reissued by the Canadian label Doremi) - as far as a complete set, I would probably vote for Nissman (I have to admit I havent heard any of the Reikaillo - he is a ve...

Just found this - not sure what Topol means about this criticism, but the Alkan Concerto is far more than a simple virtuoso showpiece - there are amazing musical moments in this work (such as the use of a whole tone scale in 1857!). I find the concept of the piece quite staggering, and have for the ...
