Schumann and Brahms Piano and Chamber Music... It took about four years for me to be able to listen to a String Quartet when I initially started listening to Classical music... I love most of the ones I've heard. But Schumann's Piano Quintett, beats me how anyone could not love it. W...

Re: Characteristics of Concert Grands
Lance, I was hoping for a detailed response from you, and boy did I get one! Thank you. I think I'd be a Bechstein person myself - I prefer a velvety tone rather than a very bright one. However, I must say that many Steinways I have played have somehow "lured" me to play better than I would normally...

Characteristics of Concert Grands
I'm sure this subject has been discussed before, but I could not find a thread using the search function. I'd be interested to know about your thoughts on different instruments. I suppose most major concert halls still have Steinways, with the odd Bösendorfer here and there, or both. Still, Gould pr...

I've been watching (and marvelling at) Michelangeli on Youtube for the last couple of nights. If any pianist could be said to be devoid of 'mannerisms' his name is surely near the top of the list. The economy of movement to produce that sort of sound is quite mind boggling. You could class Rubinste...

For me Serkin was one of the very greatest in the sence that he always seemed to be searching (and often finding) the real essence of the music he played. In other words, he was not the most lyrical of pianists, not a crowd pleaser - in fact he often sounded rather rugged, even clumsy sometimes, alt...

Obese singers are history, more or less, aren't they? It just won't do in modern opera productions that the tenor or the soprano stands stationary through the whole opera, and all the choreography (and ballet) in his/her performance is raising hands slowly and gracefully at the end of each aria. Yes, indeed, I know the Rosand Vox set very well. The pianist you are referring to is his late (first) wife, Eileen Flissler, who was an outstanding pianist. I do believe that Mozart's early works benefit from the halo effect of his late masterpieces. These juvenilia probably get 100 times the exposure of contemporaneous works, e.g. the symphonies of Myslivicek, but are they really any more worthy? Would the world be so much the poorer if K1 - K250 sudd...

Of Mozart's enormous (and enormously overrated?) oeuvre the pieces I know best are those that have been lovingly re-worked by his successors  , e.g. Alkan's solo piano transcription of the complete D minor concerto and Thalberg's of the Lacrymosa from the Requiem With all due respect, that's ...
