Re: Beethoven 9 Symphonies w/Boston SO - Leinsdorf
The only recordings in that set that really have me coming for more are Nos. 1, 8 and 9 (this last one is a favourite which is no doubt helped by the fine soloists). Leinsdorf's work on No. 6 is OK but the rest is basically one-and-done - bland and/or and uninvolving (esp. No. 3).

1. Is K504 your favourite Mozart symphony? If so, why? Yes but only by a nose over the 25th which would be my next favourite. There are plenty of classic recordings of these knocking around, about whose merits most people are roughly agreed -- in no particular order, Kempff, Barenboim, Ashkenazy, Fleisher, Serkin, maybe Lupu or Gould. Seán, if I were in the market for another Beethoven 9 set (and I'm not), of those you mention, I would probably go Abbado/BPO or Zinman/Tonhalle. Both are outstanding, of course, but I would give a slight edge to Abbado. I would love to know which Beethoven 9 sets you already have. I am wondering w...

Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
Well, it all depends on how I take to these symphonies in EMI's box. I only mention Bertini because I tend to like consistency in a cycle (not really Neville Marriner's brand, but more Herbert Blomstedt's). The impression of consistency there seems more widespread than as reported in the other cycles.

I have no Mahler in my collection, and it was between the above and Bertini's cycle as my starting point (both at around $40 including shipping). If I warm up to the symphonies enough, I'll probably then spring for Bertini.
