Re: Where does it stop: the mega-boxes
I have not seen a thing on the mega-box on Ormandy. Can someone point me to info, and I will also take a look for it. I might like this one, but it would have to a HUGE box, for sure. Lance, I'm sorry, I was kidding about that one! Wasn't clear enough when I wrote that, not quite enough caffeine in...

Where does it stop? We'll know it's getting close to the end when Sony gives us the giant Ormandy box. The early recordings (1923-30) as violinist and conductor on Cameo and Okeh, all owned by Sony; the 1930s Victor recordings with the Minneapolis Symphony; all the Victor and Columbia 78s with the P...

I've never heard the recording of Alfidi's 1960 concert in Belgium, where he was presented as pianist, conductor and composer. "A Command Performance" was the 2-LP set issued on the Jubilee label, which was not known for classical music. Reviews were not good, but the Queen of Belgium was impressed....

The 40-CD set is not absolutely complete. You don't get his very first recordings, where he accompanies Félia Litvinne (those are on Marston); there's an alternative take of the Saint-Saëns Bourée from the 1952 Tokyo sessions (on the RCA Japan 2-CD set); there's also a test pressing of the Russian D...

For your second program, I'm sure you are considering the one recording of Sibelius himself conducting: the Andante Festivo, dating from January 1, 1939. I just learned, however, that two different recordings have been published with that attribution and only one of them is actually conducted by Si...

I'll buy this one, but it may be awhile before I can work it into the budget. I'm very curious to hear what people think of Carnaval. It's the major addition here to the Horowitz recorded repertoire, but it comes from that period when Horowitz was not playing at his best.

Partial answer: the three pictured CDs offer different performances, all from 1960. You have the RCA studio recording, the Melodiya is live in Moscow, and the Doremi is dubbed from a long-deleted Columbia LP. Whatever Doremi may have done with their remastering, the original LPs were poor-sounding e...
