I have the Ormandy/Philly, which is a filler on the Sony 2-fer of the symphonies. I haven't listened to it in a few years, but it had that rich Philly string sound so apropos for the music.

That orchestra is tight! Sometimes thin sounding in the strings; other times fine. I've so many recordings of the late symphonies, I didn't get around to them in the new cycle.

I struggle with the string quartets, but love most else. I've had a hard time finding many recordings of the symphonies I like. The most recent, enjoyable find for me were the Levine/CSO symphonies.

He did a great job with several of the Beethoven symphonies at Saarbruecken. I only have 1-4 from that cycle, but the Eroica is now one of my favorites.

I have the EMI set (displayed graphically above), and the Skrowaczewski/Saarbruecken set previously mentioned, and I love them both. I'd wanted a new copy of the Giulini/VPO 8 for some time, and finally found one at hmv.co.jp. It was worth the extra cost.
