Re: Is video in classical music superfluous?

I wish there was a solid, convnient format for 5:1 sound without video. [...] Actually, there are plenty of them. Almost every modern audio media format supports that. I have ripped some of my DVDs easily in 5.1 audio format. Does anyone offer downloads in multichannel formats? Can iTunes play them...

Re: Is video in classical music superfluous?

I guess SACD is not good enough for Bigshot's ears I got burned on multichannel SACD. I bought an SACD player back when they only had analogue outs, only to find out that my 5:1 receiver only had optical in. By the time they were making SACD players with standard output, the format was already dyin...

Re: Is video in classical music superfluous?

I wish there was a solid, convnient format for 5:1 sound without video. The difference between regular stereo and surround is massive. I have a high definition projection system with a ten foot screen, and watching classical concerts on it with the 5:1 sound is actually better than being at a concer...

An Airport base station will allow you to stream your music all over your house via wifi. I find it's best to tag as you rip, when you have the packaging in front of you to refer to. You'll find gracenote has a fairly well established format for tagging classical music. The more you deviate from it,...

Otto Gerdes was a conductor who specialized in leading choruses. I had a couple of orchestral records he conducted back in the LP era and they were good. He just didn't have a big name.

Re: Vinyl LPs make a comeback

No, classical vinyl is pretty close to worthless. I go to a record swap meet and the dealers don't bring along classical because they don't want to carry them home. There's lots of 50s and 60s rock and jazz that sells like crazy, but you can't give away classical. You used to be able to until my sto...

Re: An Story That Makes Me Very Unhappy

Considering he had no feedback or creative support, it's an amazing thing that Ives worked for as long as he did. I can't imagine the superhuman strength it would take to create all that in complete isolation. When he stopped composing, he had been working for decades all output and no input. Most a...

I'm enjoying Mercury Box 2. I like the American composers in the Howard Hanson disks, and Dorati is a wonderful conductor. I'm not so keen on Brendel and Haitink and the Philips crew. It's nice, but it rarely is spectacular.

There are a lot of great mp3 virtual box sets at Amazon. The Bach Guild ones are all great and include Vox recordings, and there is a series titled "Rise of the Masters" which consists largely of recordings from the BIS label. The price is no indicator of quality here. The recordings are good.

It's less of a problem with boxes that are packaged as individual albums, because you know for sure that a duplicate is an exact duplicate, not a sorta duplicate with a different filler on it to bring it out to 70 minutes give or take a little.

Maybe the Met Ring would sound better than it looks. I have the bluray and I can't get into it. It's the exact opposite of the problems with the last Met Ring. That one was stodgy and stagebound. I generally rip CDs into my music server and box them up and put them in the garage. If the book is nice, I put it on my bookshelf. I'm more apt to look at the book than the original CDs.
