I have many, many recordings of this work, which remains, I believe, one of the greatest compositions ever written for the piano. Thanks to jserraglio's recent post, I listened to a performance on youtube by Nelson Freiere, which I never heard and I have to say that this rendition tops my list as th...

Just returned from NYC, having seen this opera on opening night. The demonstrations across the street from the Met were quite tame compared to what we expected. Bolet was an outstanding interpreter of Schumann, Schubert and Brahms as well. I heard a live performance of him playing a recital in 1942 at the Ethical Culture Society in Philadelphia and his playing of the Brahms Variations on a Handel Theme was breathtaking. This is a quote from another forum about Nagda that says it so well, I'm taking the liberty of copying it. "There is a remarkable moment at the end of that performance. The magnificent Magda Olivero died today in Milan, at the age of 104. She had a career that began early, after which she married and retired for many years, then returning after the age of 65 to her Met debut in Tosca to a remarkably new and successful career. Her voice was incredible and her acting...

Thank for that treat. First time I heard her play and she was quite remarkable, indeed What a loss at such a young age.
This performance ranks very high among the many recordings I've heard of this extremely difficult scherzo.

In our most recent season at the Met, Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer staged “Rigoletto” in a 1960’s neon-lit Las Vegas setting that resonated with traditionalists as well as the uninitiated because the story, though updated, clung faithfully to the plot.
