Ansermet & the OSR did the bounciest, friskiest, most impetuous performance of Bartok's Roumanian Folk Dances I've ever heard.

It's on Youtube, but it's chopped into parts. The real wonder of this performance is how Ansermet seems to play them all in one breath....Youtube kills that effect.

More Grieg Piano Concerto recordings of the prestereo era--tonight it's been Levant/Kurtz. Levant is his eccentric old self in the first movement;you should hear what all he does in the cadenza! The two final movements have him as much more civilized, so I can't say this is an 'ideal' Levant perform...

I've heard about him--only as Harold C. Schonberg described hi. He was made by this writer to look like a buffoon and object of derision. There appeared one bio two decades ago of him that sets the record straight, which seems like required reading for me.

Speaking of Dean Dixon, he was also head of Sweden's Gothenburg Symphony. Dixon HAD to establish his career early on, on account of his race.

Some schoolkid out there should do a term paper on him, if they haven't already.
