Back in the late 50s he played a riverboat captain or something to do with riverboats in pre-civil war America, one of the most romantic professions I could imagine.
Me too. Twain's 'A Life on the Mississippi' is one of the few books I make a point of re-reading every two years or so.

Myself, I blame it on the Dutchy of Cornwall, aided and abetted by the Faroe Islands. Their fingerprints are all over this. Bastards.

Perhaps just one more.....? Good to see you posting again, Ted. You live in an amazing part of the world, and have spoken before of how much you appreciate the natural beauty around you. I can well imagine how healthful and restorative those surroundings are now. And John Bleau. Hello my friend. I w...

If I look long enough, and hard enough, at clouds, I can often make out a 'shape' or resemblance to some person or object. Someone else might make out the same resemblence, or a different one. But any such resemblances are purely fanciful--and entirely accidental, a chance arrangement of molecules. ...

My very best wishes, Ted, for a full and complete recovery. Your suggestion that I seek out Diana Krall's 'Live in Paris' was the best music recommendation I ever received on any board. I look forward to seeing you post here again. As a digression, a melancholy side-effect of regular posting is that...

Read this for the sheer pleasure of it

Adam Gopnik is a writer whose essays I have long admired for their art and craftsmanship. His latest piece is an elegant meditation on Shaker furniture written for the current New Yorker . The essay itself might be described as 'Shaker-like' in its elegance and sense of form. Kindred souls, or those...

Hi Corlyss. See, I did take you up on your invite :) Alas, the only travel I do these days is in books. I do miss America though. It's been too long since I last visited. The other day I rewatched 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' simply to catch a glimpse of Savannah in the background. I do...

Hello Ralph, So glad to see you are on the mend. I tried leaving a phone message at the rehab unit offering my support and best wishes but got bounced from the TCC Unit to the North East Cardio-Thoracic Unit and back again (twice!) before giving up. Seems no one knew where you had been discharged to...

Yes. 'Relapse' sums it up. I quit this forum in a horse-driven huff 4 (?) years ago when Ward Botsford refused to open a non-music chat room to discuss politics etc (What we have now in the Pub). Since then I have been posting on another board. A few months ago I was in touch with Corylss (fellow po...
