Haydn Bicentennial
Will there be a Haydn Bicentennial Collection in 2009? I pray it may not be as unreasonably priced as the Mozart and Bach collections. Which reminds me: is anybody here selling a complete set of the Mozart? Next month I might be able to meet a sensible price.

True Music Lovers? I Very Much Doubt It.
8) I cannot say that I like every style of music; however, I keep track of everything that happens in all music because I don't want to give the impression that I am as ridiculously retrograde as the symphonic world here in Tampa. In 2004, a concert hall here celebrated its 40th anniversary. Did its...

The Rise and Fall of Many Countries
On 22 Nov 05, King Juan Carlos of Spain will celebrate the 30th anniversary of his reign. Back in 1975 it was widely expected that Spain would not survive the death of Franco, that there would be a Second Spanish Civil War, and that Juan Carlos would be remembered in history by the dismissive sobriq...

In the Wake of CHAIKOVSKII
Which non-Russians would you propose? Poulenc certainly had an abundant generosity of melodic charm.

In the Wake of CHAIKOVSKII
Many composers, particularly from Russia, have tried to equal Chaikovskii's tunefulness and dramatic feeling. Glazunov, Gliere and Liadov bombed miserably; Prokofiev and Rachmaninov succeeded admirably. Who else deserves to be applauded as a worthy successor of Petr Illich?

 Wouldn't you regard me as an IGNORANT VULGARIAN if I only watched standard Hollywood movies and never sampled art and independent films? Music is no different; if I want to deserve the title of TRUE MUSIC LOVER I must know all the music that exists. Because of the unpardonable laziness and neg...

Now I Know My ABCs; Won't You Come & Sing With Me?
:D A year ago, one of the announcers of WUSF-FM proposed Holst as the third of the Hs. Obviously he was kidding; Holst is a minor player who is nowhere near the standard of Handel and Haydn. Whom would you propose instead? I myself have devised the 9 Bs: JS Bach, Bartok, Beethoven, Berlioz, Boccheri...

Corlyss_D, like you, I am very concerned about classical orchestras and stations having degenerated into mere museums for dead music. What shall we do to remedy that tragic situation?

So the "great music" station WUSF-FM is nothing but glorified Muzak that is intended to be heard only with closed ears? So that is why Tampa is the Lightning Capital of the World: every composer who ever set note to paper is cursing this insufferable insult to their profession and their reputations....

KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI
Where can I write to Penderecki? I love his CREDO so much that I want to encourage him to write a full setting of the Mass--a setting as magnificent as the Mass in b of JS Bach, the CECILIENMESSE of FJ Haydn and the MISSA SOLEMNIS of Beethoven!

...that radio stations such as WUSF-FM of Tampa, FL, are so terrified of digging real deep into contemporary symphonic music (1950-21st century)? So a bunch of it is dull and annoying; what of it?--that's only to be expected. Much of modern rock and country is terrible, but that doesn't mean that th...

Alleluya! Praise the Lord in His sanctuary; praise Him in the firmament of His power! Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to His excellent greatness! Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; praise Him with the psaltery and harp! Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; praise Him wi...

Music That I Have Not Yet Discovered
Hello to all. I'm new here, so let me explain that I'm 50, and that--apart from a few operas--I know the standard repertoire by heart, so that I'm now looking for new music to discover. For example, I'm not interested in listening for the twentieth time to the Grieg Piano Concerto--now playing over ...
