Did you ever hear Leonid Kogan? If so what was your reaction? I heard him once by accident as part of a subscription series (I had never even heard of him before) and remember being impressed by the nobility of his playing. I think it was the Brahms Violin Concerto but I"m not sure.

You're absolutely right. The fact that LB in fuzzy B&W replete with references to the Beatles may be the best we've got to offer today's kids is not a hopeful sign.

With Ozawa in mind, I dug around today and found his Prokofiev 5th & Kije with the BPO, unplayed and forgotten. I played I and liked it. A lot.

I agree with Ralph, the Stokowski Vanguard disk is the one to have if you're having only one. Maybe also the two operas?--Four Saints in Three Acts (Nonesuch) and The Mother of Us All (New World).
