How do you expect the Times to "admit or disclose" their political slant, Randall? I think most of us can figure out for ourselves which political slant a paper has on our own. Excellent question. I certainly wouldn't expect them say anything like "we are liberals, and generally only present facts ...

The New York Times takes many editorial stands, some on issues of no interest to non-Gothamites. Their editorials are invariably well-written and they often reflect what many consider to be a liberal agenda. What's wrong with that? The problem is that the NYT's liberal agenda is NOT confined to the...

The New York Times takes many editorial stands, some on issues of no interest to non-Gothamites. Perhaps you should be less concerned with labels and pay some attentuion to facts. Yes - the problem is trying to find reliable sources that reasonably try to present all or most of the facts relevant to the issue in question. It seems all too often, we get only facts that support a particular agen...

I think you want to draw a better line of distinction betwen editorials and reports. This was an extensive report, not a statement of editorial opinion. Do our right-minded friends know the difference? Maybe. Obviously I'm very cynical in regards to politics in general. What bothers me the most is ...

OK, fair enough - It technically is a report. To me it is essentially an editorial disguised as a report.

I continue to be amazed that anyone can still take the NY Times editorials about Iraq seriously. Prior the initial elections, they had virtually the entire situation nearly 180 degrees from reality. For me, the NY Times editorial is the libral's equivalent of the conservative's Limbaugh letter, exce...

I think we disagree on something like Furtwangler's Beethoven fifth, with his extended rests, long holding of notes, shifting tempos, etc. I don't associate any of these things with imprecision or technical flaws. To me, they are interpretive decisions that relate to the literal vs. subjective phil...

BTW, Sony's Play Station 3 will have 1080p capability, which means eventually 1080p will be standard for all HD Display devices, including hidef DVD. Whoever came up with 1080i as the standard wasn't thinking very well. This means in a about a year or 2, I'll have to replace my TV with one that has ...

I'm just not a stickler for great execution. As a listener, I find the interpretive aspects of a performance more interesting. I think just about everyone does. Some of my favorite performances have technical flaws and errors; however, it is anything but those flaws that attracts me the performance...

Randall, I also think that the straight-forward, stick to the score, sharp-edged approach makes it easier for the musicians to play precisely than when they are playing for a conductor who may change his interpretive view of the work from night to night and who does NOT want that sharp edged approa...

With regard to the precision being equated with emotional coldness debate, I don't see the connection either. The trick is to be both precise and musical/emotional. Perhaps some conductors can't focus on precision and be musical at the same time, but that is a separate issue, IMO. As far as I'm con...

I confess to not having heard that many Barenboim performances, but I do feel like I have heard enough to justify an general uninterest in his conducting. I recall the new Tchaikovsky Piano concerto with Lang Lang and the CSO being dreadful - I don't remember even being able to sit all the way throu...

I haven't heard Toscanini yet. I have the Szell 7, 8, & 9 on SACD - haven't listened to them in few years but remember being somewhat disappointed. I should go back and listen again though.

The Reiner/CSO performance is tops for me. Kertesz/VPO is second.

I personally feel that Cable TV is way overpriced. I pay nearly $50/month for basic analog cable without any box or premium channels. IMO, that's at least double what such a service is worth. I don't want to give them another dime. Certainly, it's overpriced. But right now (outside of DirectV and t...

Randall, I realize that I am probably "beating a dead horse" here, but I can't believe that the cable company price for HD service is SO STEEP that you can't see your way clear to subscribe to it. My cable company (Cox Cable-Las Vegas) charges me the humungous sum of $9.80 per month for ALL availab...

Your display is native 1080I and you should set your player and any other HD sources for that scan rate. I have tried 1080i - I guess I don't like the "vibrating" look of interlaced scanning. It also tends to darken the image as much as the 720p does. I just tried the THX Optimizer that comes with ...

Thanks for the replies. Mel, At this point, I'm just not ready to pay for HD broadcasts. My cable bill is already more than double what I want to pay. It's too bad that TVs do not come with a gamma adjustment control - it would make calibration much, much easier. Maybe I'll try one of those calibrat...

TV/HDTV Calibration questions?

Dear fellow video enthusiasts, does anyone have any suggestions for fine tuning and professionally calibrating one's TV/HDTV set? Re: HDTV is 720p or 1080i (why not 1080p?)

Dear fellow HDTV owners, 1. can anyone explain difference between 720p and 1080i in practical terms? 2. Also, how come the standard isn't 1080p? Wouldn't that be more than twice the resolution of 720p? Can we expect HD-DVD players in the future that will convert 1080i into 1080p in a similar way th...
