What are you doing for Valentine's Day 2006?

Post by Barry » Mon Jul 11, 2005 4:05 pm

I decided to buy tickets for one Carnegie Hall concert next season. After browsing over the schedule, I determined that Jannsons/Concertgebouw in the Shostakovich seventh was the single concert that interested me above all the others (with the possible exception of Rattle/Philly in Bruckner's seventh, but I can see that down here in Philly). But it happens to be on Valentine's Day evening.

My girlfriend isn't really a classical fan, but she's very understanding :). We'll make an entire evening out of it. I'll let her pick the restaurant :).

What are you doing for Valentine's Day 2006?
Why? You want company?

I think this carries prior planning to a new pinnacle.

Corlyss,
I'm definately a planner :).

But in the case of major orchestral concerts, they are sometimes announced more than a year in advance, and if you want a good seat, it's best to buy early.

A P, eh? I'm an INTJ. That's waaaaaaay out of my planning range, which is about next week.

I almost had a coronary planning for my first trip to the Munich opera festival in 1979. I started in July or August of 78, and that was waaaaaaay too much planning time for me. But like you said, if you want to get tickets, you gotta be prepared to buy them months in advance.

Do you recall if you want to or saw the Bavarian State Opera? Sawallisch was their director then. He's a huge favorite of mine.

Hell, yes! That was the reason I went - just to see the Staatsoper's festival. Fassbaender was singing then - got to see Werther, Rosenkavalier, Feuersnot, Lear, Barber, and others I think. To be honest, I don't recall who was conducting. I can't think I didn't see Sawallish, but I honestly don't remember. BTW, speaking of Sawallish, do you have the Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle in the original version with him conducting and playing the piano? It's one of my favorite recordings of all time.

Don't have that recording. I'm not nearly the vocal music fan that you are. I tend to stick mostly to orchestral music (although I did by a recording of some Schumann vocal music over the weekend).

I'm guessing that if it was a major festival centered around the State Opera that you went to, that Sawallisch, being the artistic director, must have been there. He's not the type to call attention to himself though.

Nothing says “Romance” like music about the Battle of Leningrad. Have you really considered the position you will be placing yourself in? Will you be able to say no when she wants to see some sappy chick flick or hideous Broadway musical? Egad man, you might find yourself someplace ordering drinks with silly names and …dancing!

Yikes. Maybe I should have thought this out better :).

Actually, I'm fortunate. Aside from orchestral concerts, my favorite thing to do is going out to eat, and my girlfriend shares that passion. We're always thinking about our next meal.

She also happens to work (as an editor) weekend nights, so I am free to go to Philadelphia Orchestra concerts on Saturday nights :).

Go for the Carnegie Deli. After a bowl of their killer matzoh ball soup and a pastrami on rye carried by two waiters she'll be yours forever.

Here's the prospectus for this year's festival, which has been around for a very long time. I believe Richard Strauss was instrumental either in establishing the festival or putting it on the musical map. The players often leave Munich to go to Salzburg's festival. My idea of a real opera company is one that like the Staatsoper has a 10.5 month season, followed by a festival. I'm thinking that Sawallish was the principal conductor 25 years ago and not the artistic director.

BTW, do you see a resemblence between Sir Peter Jonas and our very own Dave Stybr? Maybe this is what he's doing that causes him to depart the premises.

*****Well you must take her to Gray's Papaya at Broadway and 72d - no reservations required. Full meal under $3 a person.

Look, as long as you don't take your girlfriend (etc) to a Bruckner 8 concert, you have a chance of exiting the concert hall with your relationship intact - though with DSCH 7 I'd say it's not a big chance.

Herman,
If they were playing Bruckner's 8th, I'd drag her and her entire family to the hall if that was the only way I could get there!

Please don't do it Barry. I once did - to one of the best Bruckner Eighths in my life - and all she did was gag for oxygen.

And by now I can't blame her. Maybe the Stockholm syndrom?
