Name that tune!

Post by TestekleeZ » Fri Jul 15, 2005 1:31 pm

Hi. I enjoy classical music from time to time and I was wondering if someone here could help me identify this song.

I heard this in a movie that gives it no credit whatsoever and I swear I've heard this melody before when i was a child. With all the classical music out there, it's difficult to pin it down. I hope this is the right place to post and that this is appropriate. I read the TOS and this kind of request appears to be fine.

Thanks,

-Chris

Now which part of this recording do you remember from your childhood?

The music is the Preludio from Bach's Partita No. 3 for unaccompanied violin, BWV 1006. It's widely available on discs of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin.

I just have to say it's hard for me to believe that this would not have been credited at the end of the movie. The movie producers would have had to get the rights to the performance before they used it.

How many folks watch the end credits carefully. Personally I need to know who the Best Boy, Standby Painter and Completion Bond insurer are.

The first two measures played in particular. I remember riding with my father down to Florida when I was eleven or so and I remember how wonderful that song sounded. I didn't get the name of it and I've only heard it a couple of times since then in eighteen years lol.

Thank you so much for helping me find out the name and artist who created. It is a lovely song indeed.

Oh yeah, the movie was, "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" (1996) starring Janine Garofalo. Not the best movie ever made but certainly was sweet to hear that sound again. I've tried several boards and yours is the first to even acknowledge it. Again, thank you. You guys are sharp.

Well, now that you mention it, I used to think that "Music by . . . " meant, you know, all the music. It wasn't until I started recognizing classical music in movies that I looked diligently for the music attributions. When I stay to the end for the credits, it's usually for the music, followed by the location filming. I don't really need to know the wig maker and the accountant and the lawyer.

Oh, yes! I remember that show. I really enjoyed it. I think very highly of Garofalo's acting - she reminds me a lot of Stockard Channing for some reason, a woman with inate comic timing. I don't even remember the Bach tune being in there.

I'm glad we could help out, Chris. If you get the complete Sonatas and Partitas, you will probably hear other familiar tunes. They are very lovely, some of my favorite Bach.
