Lance Was Right!

Post by Corlyss_D » Sun Aug 07, 2005 3:09 pm

After years of dismissing Lance's statements that I owned the Kempff Beethoven Sonatas recorded in mono 1951-56 and reissued on cd in the 90s, I opened up one of the boxes of cds in the garage this afternoon and the set literally fell out into my hands. He was right, and I owe him a public apology for not taking him seriously and for teasing him about it for so long.

So here it is: I'm sorry I doubted your most excellent memory. I should have known better and I promise not to do it again, but I don't think sending you the set forth with is suitable amends for my offense. We'll think of something more appropriate.

Well, thank you, Corlyss! Apology accepted. I've never seen your collection but I knew you had it. But "amends" might be suitable for your offense. Oh well, I have the set on LP, a beautiful boxed edition on DG; it's the CD set I wanted, however. I'm not sure if it is still available. If it is, I think someone like Peter Schenkman might put me on to it. It's DG set No. 447.966-2.

You can aquire it from www.jpc.de
Search Classic and afterwards Kempff, and you will find it easily.

I visited the site, and the only Beethoven 32 edition I see there doesn't indicate whether this is the 1950s mono edition or the later stereo edition. It is the mono that I want. Any ideas?

I have that set as well, and the performances are generally crisper and better articulated than the later stereo set. That set also included a bonus disc with concerti of Mozart (21) and Beethoven (3). (I'm going from my fallible memory here).

It's available from amazon.de as well, and I looked at the pic enlarged. It's the same mono recording as mine. It also has the extra disc John mentioned.

Let's not get silly. I don't know ANYONE who wasn't aware Corlyss had the set. My barber mentioned it to me when the subject first came up here.

I don't know Ralph. I think Corlyss has about two discs more of Beethoven than she has of Bach. :)

I truly think I have more Bach than Beethoven. I mean, the contrast in sheer output is enough to guarantee that.

You can enlarge the picture of the frontpage of the box. It is written there and easy to read.
