Hmm. I have been personally impressed by Matsuev's pianism. The first CD recordings I acquired were on RCA and I had pleasure in tracking all of them down. These include a live 2007 recital at Carnegie Hall [RCA 29146 or a 43-CD set 03227 entitled "Great Moments at Carnegie Hall."] Another RCA disc was on Russian RCA [08063] containing the Grieg Piano Concerto under the baton of Vladimir Spivakov. Then Matsuev began recording for a few other labels including Mariinsky, this latter offering stunning sound. I have some Russian friends that are pianists, however, who seem not to hold him in highest esteem. But there is generally something magnetic in Russian pianists, their training, and the electricity they bring to the music they play. Thank you for pointing out this November 9, 2018 recital.

I've heard a lot of negative comments about Matseuv but I'm unsure how valid they are. Some of them may be political resentments because of his relationship with Vladimir Putin. You hear the same comments about Valery Gergiev!! Just saying.

I have heard Matsuev mainly in the big Romantic concertos, encore pieces, and Russian composers' solo works. He is supportive of young Russian artists. On this Carnegie recital , I found the Beethoven ( one of my fav LvB piano sonatas ) the most interesting of his playing, the Chopin the least. There is certainly no shame in bringing big technique to the table. One of his better outings I've heard to date.

It is reported Rachmaninoff said when he himself played his " Corelli" Variations in his recitals, he would play as many of the variations as he thought he could without boring a particular audience.

I suspect Matsuev's Carnegie audience was full of Russians, as evidenced by all the flowers Matsuev got. And , after all, Trump is also a good friend of Putin !

Cannot blame your physician's thoughts. However, musicians, for the most part, were largely not to be included in the lineup. Think of what poor Maria Yudina had to go through ... but as much as she detested the Stalin regime, he held her in the very highest esteem. I never realized until I saw a recent documentary on TV that Stalin was a lover of classical music. I know Hitler loved Wagner, but not too many others.
