Anton Dvořák
Symphonies No's. 5 & 9
Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra
Mariss Jansons - conducting.
I bought this box set a few years ago and have not listened to it much since then. I returned to it earlier this week and listened to the Fifth and this is a lovely colourful performance, I particularly like the writing for, and the sound of the woodwinds, especially the clarinets and flutes. The Ninth is very good too but it's not my favourite performance.

Thank you for that interesting post Pepe. I certainly would like to hear Gardiner and his Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique perform that work!josé echenique wrote:That´s one of Colin Davis´s best recorded efforts in recent years Fergus. And fortunately Heppner was still in top form when the recording was made. Overall, it´s an excellent Les Troyens. Colin Davis´s previous, landmark recording in PHILIPS is memorable mostly because of Jon Vickers as Aeneas, but the Dido and Cassandra are nowhere in his class. Originally PHILIPS wanted Janet Baker as Cassandra and Regine Crespin as Dido, but for contractual reasons it couldn´t be.Fergus wrote:
Acts 1, 2 & 3.
My personal favourite Les Troyens is not even in cd, but in dvd. Gardiner who also has a very British (because the French hate Berlioz ha, ha) affinity with the score conducted a glorious and gorgeous production at the Chatelet, and the Dido and the Cassandra, Susan Graham and Anna Caterina Antonacci look and sound like Aegean goddesses.
Go figure, the stupid people of Opus Arte forgot to put the name of Gregory Kunde on the cover, the Aeneas!!!!.

forgive me for saying so Fergus, but that must be a rather concise series ...Fergus wrote:

Unfortunately it is Jared but not due to lack of composers or talent I must add. There is a thriving musical scene over here but unfortunately the market is so small it does not justify the expense of the recordings and distribution etc. The result is that few of them get onto CD and those that do end up costing the likes of me quite a lot of money to buy as a resultJared wrote:forgive me for saying so Fergus, but that must be a rather concise series ...Fergus wrote:

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
I have great affection for Krystian Zimerman´s first recording of the Chopin concertos. His pianism was already godlike, and Giulini is the perfect partner for him (as he was NOT for Horowitz in the DG Mozart piano concerto #23 with La Scala). Sure there are other great recordings, notably Argerich with Dutoit, a more volatile and dangerous Chopin, but Zimerman is so musical and aristocratic that whenever I return to this recording it´s always a delight.

Bach: Brandenburg Concertos
Gewandhausorchester Leipzig & Riccardo Chailly
Decca
Highly enjoyable! These period influenced performances on modern instruments strike a nice middle road between the archaic Munchinger/Marriner type performances and the sometimes overly fast and, at times, harsh performances of Goebel/MAK and the like. I consider myself a HIP fan in Baroque music but this set will absolutely receive repeated listening from yours truly.

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
Is there a better rendition of the Berg Violin Concerto than this Leonid Kogan's recording? I've always loved Szeryng's, but this one surpasses him with its profundity and solemness of the sound. Right now am listening to Hindemith with Oistrakh. His Stravinsky - still ahead. What a CD.

Hello everyone. Long time to see.
I listened to the superb Symphonie Fantastique and the Carnival Overture by Berlioz with the LSO conducted by Colin Davis
Davis is a fantastic Berlioz conductor, in my opinion.
Regards,
Matt.
