What are YOU listening to today?
Re: What are YOU listening to today?
This is a great 10 CD box set, I bought it from jpc in November for €10. The performances were recorded between 1949 and 1957, it is well worth having. There are some real gems in this collection not least Rimsky-Korsakov's, Scheherazade.
CD 9
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Scheharazde
Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
Rudolf Schultz - violin
Ferenc Fricsay - conductor

This is a sparkling, powerful performance and the soloist Rudolf Schultz is very impressive, it is very enjoyable, strongly recommended.

Rafael Kubelik didn´t make nearly as many opera recordings as he deserved, but those that he did are all marvelous recordings that have stood well the test of time: the Fischer-Dieskau/Scotto Rigoletto, the long dormant Meistersinger, the James King Lohengrin, etc., and this star-studded Palestrina is so good that it seems almost impossible to surpass.

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
We have grown with these (Callas) recordings, we have listened to them hundreds of times, and yet they still amaze, they still marvel. Callas´s Leonora is beyond compare, even among the likes of Zinka Milanov and Leontyne Price, La Divina was in a class of her own. Di Stefano has been accused of not having the squillo for Manrico, but he is the one tenor who sounds young enough to be Azucena´s son (I know Manrico is NOT Azucena´s son ha, ha) but he still is magnificent, singing his heart out and giving it all as if there´s no tomorrow. And what can we say of the glorious Azucena of Fedora Barbieri, a commanding, terrific performance that has not been equaled since. And the gorgeously sung Di luna of the great Rolando Panerai is also a performance to treasure. His high-baritone is just right for this role. And Karajan conducts an elegant, Italianate Trovatore, without the Brucknerian overtones of his later EMI version with Price.
Here we are in the company of giants.

This morning:
The Four Seasons by Vivaldi from this local recording:
Mozart Symphony no. 40 and 41 from
Bruckner Symphony no. 9 Baremboim/Chicago Symphony orchestra
My favorite version of that symphony and one of the many reasons why I would like to purchase the complete cycle containing that very same version. My stereo was set of a relatively high level and the brilliance, clarity and amazing play was clearly apparent in every corner of that performance
No matter what people here think of Baremboim I think that he among my favorite conductor
Borodin Symphony no. 3 Ansermet/Orchestre de la Suisse Romande from

The Kabalevsky #2 is a major work: why it's not performed and recorded more often is beyond me. Isserlis's BBC recording (free with the magazine) is also very fine.

Continuing with Johann Christian Bach, it´s always a pleasure to revisit this 1772 Serenata composed for London. The music is really excellent, with several and important flute obligatos composed for a flautist friend of J.C. Bach.
The recording is everything one could wish for.

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
This is one of my favorite recordings of Prokofiev´s Romeo & Juliet. To say that the Concertgebouw plays magnificently is an understatement, and Myung-Whun Chung works his magic through the selections (what a pity that it was not recorded complete ) , still this is far more than just another recording of the concert suite, it´s music-making of the highest order, the incredibly moving "Death of Juliet" alone is worth the price of the disc.
Re: What are YOU listening to today?
Chung is a great conductor, under-appreciated in America, although he was trained here, and is a Juilliard grad, having finished his training there with Jean Morel. There's a very fine Shostakovich IV w/Philadelphia (the orchestra that issued the world premiere recording of the work under Ormandy) that's been issued by DGG, but most of his recordings were made in Europe.josé echenique wrote:

I heard Zimerman in Concerto #1 substituting at the very last minute for an indisposed Martha Argerich back in 1986. Ozawa conducted the Vienna Philharmonic. Next year they recorded both concertos in Boston.
I would say it´s the finest version since the Richter/Kondrashin.

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
This is a live 2-cd recording of a concert given at Paris´Theatre des Champs-Elysées on December 19, 2011, for the 10th anniversary of the ensemble Concert d´Astrée.
There´s some Rameau, Lully and Purcell in the first half, but the composer most generously represented is Handel, with selections from both operas and oratorios.
Pretty much EVERYBODY in the Baroque circuit was there: Natalie Dessay, Sara Mingardo, Philippe Jaroussky, Patricia Petibon, Sandrine Piau, Ann Hallenberg, Topi Lehtipuu, plus guest stars like Rolando Villazón, Anne Sofie von Otter, Lorenzo Regazzo and Christopher Purves.
It´s all great fun, and it does have some outstanding performances, like Petibon singing a mad-crazy version of the aria "Aux langueurs d´Apollon" from Rameau´s Platée (the character is La Folie, so it´s only right that it´s mad-crazy). Anne Sofie von Otter is also outstanding in Phédre´s great lament from Hippolyte et Aricie.
On top of everything, the concert was given for a benefit of cancer research, so besides the great music there´s a noble cause to support.
