A beautiful work well played. I have two DVDs of this ballet; my favourite is still Fonteyn. It's a little long but suited her gift absolutely, dreamy and so technically good that technicalities never enter my mind. The Royal Ballet was at about its best around then. I'm completely sold on the Knissen with this music as well as Fonteyn!maestrob wrote:

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
Some very fine singing in coloratura arias: Swenson has a wide dynamic range, and beautiful pianissimi on high notes. Sadly, her contract was not renewed recently at the MET in spite of her fine instrument and looks: she is and will be missed. A great artist.
Also:
Shostakovich VIII/Kondrashin (1967).
Grew up with this inspired reading (available then on sandy, blue label Melodiya discs smuggled in fom Russia). Intense, fire-breathing, apocalyptic, this, plus Mravinsky's live effort recorded by the BBC, are must-have versions for the Shostakovich collector.

Exquisite rare fare, and some of the best conducting I've heard from Bonynge. It must have been a joy to work on this album. Highly recommended.

Do you mean that he actually conducted record well? I did not think that was possible...maestrob wrote:

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
Bonynge had some good moments on record that I admire: his Lucia, Lakme, and The Art of the Diva double album w/Joan Sutherland. OTOH, his Faust w/Sutherland/Corelli is clueless, IMHO. Bonynge was no slouch, but he many times lacked energy in deference to JS's ability to sing long lines. He and JS made a career together, but I have no doubt of his ability to work successfully on his own had he been given a different life.Chalkperson wrote:Do you mean that he actually conducted record well? This morning's listening fare included a "Haydnesque" selection:
Sergei Prokofiev
Symphony No. 1
Boston Symphony Orchestra
Serge Koussevitzky - conducting.
[Recorded in 1947]
Koussevitzky really drives the orchestra at a frenetic pace, they take less than eleven and a half minutes to complete the piece, I love the sound of the woodwinds, this is gorgeous music-making.

Sean: A man who knows Mahler VII well. Abbado & Solti: what could be better? I grew up with the Solti, and it's been a benchmark for me ever since. Certainly, I'm of the opinion that Abbado learned from Solti in Chicago, and that's why his Chicago disc is so good!
