--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Celebrated as the musical poet of the English landscape, Vaughan Williams was also a visionary composer of enormous range: from the pastoral lyricism of The Lark Ascending and the still melancholy of Silent Noon to the violence of the Fourth Symphony and the grand ceremonial of All people that on earth do dwell, he assumed the mantle of Elgar as our national composer. This edition, released to mark the 50th anniversary of his death, presents all the major orchestral, chamber, vocal and stage works, as well as many lesser pieces and rarities, in the finest interpretations. All your favourite Vaughan Williams is here, in over 34 hours of music on 30 CDs.

This looks like a nice collection, as is the Elgar box. I'm also hoping that EMI will issue a Holst Collector's Edition as well.

I will look forward to the US pricing for this item myself. It's hopeful and since I don't already have the Handley set of Symphonies, that is even better.

That box set is available on Amazon UK but at this stage the prospect of wading through some thirty Vaughan Williams CDs is a bit too much for me I think.

The point is to grab it now, whilst it's available...before EMI goes bankrupt...

:x :x :x The Mass is a horribly uninspired and uninspiring bore; only the Low Mass of Faure is worse. I truly pray that the other choral pieces of this collection may be on the same level as V-W's symphonies. :? :? :?

Steven Smith's long article on Vaughan Williams, in this Sunday's New York Times, includes favorable comment on the EMI boxed set and also on a Tony Palmer biographical documentary released on DVD:

A good piece of work.

The Palmer Documentary is worth getting/renting/watching..as are all of his films, I recently watched the ones on Callas, Puccini, Gorecki and am looking forward to watching the one on Stravinsky...

I had to buy this, of course. I'm not sure that I am ecstatic about it as I already own many of the recordings - it's been difficult to find a complete list of what's in the box. I may pull the CDs I already have and give them to my brother. What do most of you do when confronted with duplicates in this manner?

I too, am inlcined to give duplicate CDs to my brother as I know that he will appreciate them. I am not inclined to keep them or to sell them either for that matter.

This came in the mail a couple of days ago.

The duplication is not nearly as bad as I feared. I found the first 6 or so CDs overlap with the Handley symphony box set and the rest are older performances not easily found. Some of the pieces in the Handley symphony box, such as Flos Campi and Job, feature different performers in this set. I can't fault them for including the Handley symphonies since that alone makes this a great purchase for those new to Vaughan Williams. (And this is a best-selling CD set, apparently).

This 30 CD set includes a lot of choral music I've never heard, plus a complete Pilgrim's Progress, which is hard to find, as well as an older 'Dona Nobis Pacem' which I wasn't aware of. Lots of 50s and 60s performances with Boult, et al. I look forward to listening to this.
