I am creating a personal "list," - need your feedback!

Post by Lance » Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:44 am

We all have sign-on names. We have become such a closely knot CMG family that I would like to compile a personal list of your actual FIRST name.

I known SLOFSTRA is Henry; I know JBUCK is John.
I know CHARMNEWTON is John.
I know MADAME is Leenie (Colleen).
I know FEBNYC is Frank, etc., etc.
Karl Henning's name speaks for itself.
John Francis speaks for itself.
Agnes speaks for itself.
Chalkie [Chalkperson] speaks for itself., etc.

I know many of you on a first-name basis, but frankly, some I don't recall or remember. (Crack it up to aging!)

My name: Lance, of course!

BUT PLEASE give me feedback like this:

Sign-on name = Name I can call you.

I would like to have this from everyone if possible. Many thanks!

Sign on is Seán and my name is Seán Dunne.

If you want to put the fada on the a in Seán all you have to do is to keep your finger on the <Alt Gr> key whilst you type the letter a and you will get á.

Seán (and others using non-European keyboards):

(from the Microsoft Word Help Menu) The ALT GR key is on the right side of the keyboard on some non-U.S. keyboard layouts. ALT GR is equivalent to the CTRL+ALT key combination, and you can use it with other keys to enter additional characters. Microsoft Word can differentiate between the left and right ALT keys so that you can use CTRL+ALT and ALT GR key combinations.

(from ME :) ) You can go to Word's "Insert" Menu, then go to Symbols and you will be provided a surprisingly complete set of alphabetic characters from most European (and some non-European) languages, including the fada on the a in Seán. Simply click on the character, hit Control C to copy it, and Control V to place it in context.

And yes, HoustonDavid still begins with "D", no Alt Gr key required.

David, thanks for going to the trouble to explain that. I should have said that one may create the letter á by typing the ASCII character 160. To do that all one has to do is to press down on the <Alt> key and type 160 on the number pad and you will see the letter á. In fact you may type any character using this method.

Seán:

Years ago (before Microsoft Word), I used ASCII for foreign language alphabetic characters in music cataloguing (for example), and it certainly works, but the problem is needing the complete list of ASCII numbers=letters "close to hand". Not always practical. Using Insert/Symbols in Microsoft Word is very straighforward and quite complete, including all the capital letters with foreign "markings".

Maybe Europeans don't use Word as their primary word processing software, but here in the U.S. (and Canada) it is practically the standard for word processing. It runs on both Macintosh and MSDOS-based microcomputers. Before Word, there were many different and competing word processing systems, especially Word Perfect, but Microsoft seems to have won that war.

When ASCII was the only way to properly use foreign words that required accents and various other "signs" over or under certain characters, it was better than nothing, and still works today, but Word Insert/Symbols is much more practical, for multiple foreign characters, IMO. :) Of course, if the only character you need is the fada on the a in Seán, then it is definately quicker to use Alt 160, which you undoubtedly know by heart. :D

You are so right-on; Now I don't have to go into Word here at CMG to use foreign characters, including the fada on the a in Seán (or is that Mac Shawn?). :D Both he and I can comfortably type the correct foreign languages so common in music terminology and naming conventions. Thank you!!

I will be wary of his shillaley, but how can you not love a guy who uses the signature:

I will always appreciate it and I have used it on other blog sites, having stolen it from Seán. I admitted my theft to him when he admitted appreciating my own signature. Maybe he uses it elsewhere, too! :D
