I do know that Jared, in fact, I have complete cycles of Haydn, Shostakovich, Bartok, Mozart et al. I don't have the box set you've mentioned but I do have this:Jared wrote:Sean, there are some other lovely sets of String Quartets around you know... have you ever tried these?Seán wrote: That's number five Jared.
I'm not a one trick pony, you know?

It's my favourite modern set, the Gewandhaus make beautiful Recordings, they make the Emerson's seem like Street Musicians...Seán wrote:
I was going to get a copy of the Artemis Beethoven Quarete cycle, that was before Amazon trebled the price, I am fed up with rip off merchants so I decided to get a copy of the Gewandhaus cycle instead. I really like their Mendelssohn complete string cycle so I decided to try their Beethoven recordings, a big leap of faith, I know. The set is beautifully presented, another good reason to ignore downloads in favour of the physical product.
Does naybody else have a copy of the set, do you like it?

just in case you hadn't noticed, I'm really in love with all things Haydn at present... so you can imagine my great pleasure when I checked into ebay, and found this delightful little bargain appear for less than half the price it is on Amazon:
apparently, it's in Mint condition too, so I'm really rather pleased with myself!

^^ thanks, I had read that it was considered to be the standard for this repertoire... and I have LOADS of Beaux Arts performances anyway, so the intention had always been there, but I just couldn't resist it at the price, even if it sits on the shelf until next spring...

I already ordered the Bavouzet, looks very tempting. The Lortie is certainly not bad, and I agree with you about Hewitt. Not my cup of tea either.maestrob wrote:IMHO, this is infinitely better than Angela Hewitt, who's rather boring by comparison. This is probably the best overall Ravel collection I have heard. Bavouzet is a truly great pianist in this repertoire.
Both are fine but I wonder if Bavouzet outshines them.
I´m going to put the Bavouzet in my next Amazon order anyway.

I'm afraid that pickings were slim and opportunities few down in 'Charity Shop Central' this morning, howeveer for the princely sum of £1, I decided that another version of Scheherazade couldn't hurt:

This turned up for a pittance compared to the set of Nielsen's symphonies that I've been considering. So for now Arnold it is. I'll pick up Nielsen when the price is right
Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
One of the big gaps in my collection is the fact that I don't -- or rather I didn't until now -- have recordings of Haydn's Piano Sonatas so I bought this set which has Christine Schornsheim playing harpischord, clavichord and fortepiano; on listening to a small selection of performances I must say that this is a very interesting set.

An Amazon bargain. Another day and another set of discs. This is a 3 cd set of Mozart's Haydn Quartets No. 14 - 19 performed by the Quartetto 'Perfecto' Italiano.

I thought this set worth a try for under a tenner. I have duplicated the recording of 'Seven Last Words from the Cross', but no bother. The Haydn masses are great favourites of mine so the Hickox set is definitely on the radar for when the price suits meJared wrote:please let us know how you get on Darren... although I'm about to embark on Hickox's boxset, which I have been looking forward to hearing for a couple of years now, and it has finally reached the top of the pile!!bombasticDarren wrote:
