Unfortunately, its one of those sets where the price never seems to suit... I spent 3 years looking at it on Amazon and for it on ebay, before finally relenting on around the £28 mark... :?

^^ that's brilliant Darren, many thanks... :D

actually, I've just written you a PM out with all my details, but the site is obviously glitching at present, and won't let me send a PM, so I've lost the message... :( Needless to say however, that I'd love it... thanks.

Incidentally, I tried to start a new thread about 2 hours ago, about EMI being bought out by Universal for $1.2bn, but it wouldn't let me post that, either... :(

Yes, sorry Sean... this page all looks a bit unnecessary in the light of day... we were just having PMing problems which appear to have been sorted by Lance now, so normal service and all that... 8)

I enjoyed this combination for Gounod's symphonies so hopefully this will be of a similar standard

Jared, no need to apologise at all lad, I was just trying to give young Darren a gentle nudge in the direction of Dublin and to remind him that we are still alive and kicking, that's all.

This lovely recital was released in 1997, although I hadn't seen it before. Recorded live at the 1976 Edinburgh Festival, it consists of music of Dorumsgaard, Mahler, Ives, Poulenc and Britten and two encores. Included as a bonus is a duet from Massenet's Cendrillon, "Toi qui m'es apparue" recorded in Canada in 1979.

Let us know how you find it Jared. I am always on the lookout for a well-written reference text :)

I personally love this book:-

Yes, it's dated, but also witty and engaging. I have read it 3 times now and it's great to dip into :)

^^ it has a good enough write-up, so I thought I'd give it a go.. I could do with a couple more general textbooks, and this one looks like it will fit the bill... :D

Thank you, I will. I admit that, after pondering the merits and otherwise of Karajan's musicological approach to Mozart, the clincher was the thought of grabbing nine symphonies for a fiver.

Although I like your thinking (and feel that in your parsimony, I have found a kindred spirit) I would venture to suggest that there might be sound economic reasons why you can pick up 9 of Karajan's Mozart Symphonies for a fiver...

If those include the digital recordings of the last six, they are first-rate. Crisp and energetic. Karajan may be generalized as soft-edged, but not here (nor in Beethoven, either).

I have very little of Grieg's output in my collection and none of his chamber works, so I bought this set to get a feel for his music, it's still available on jpc for €2.99:

By the way, the Beaux Arts Trio box set of Beethoven Trios is FANTASTIC, I love it, do yourself a favour and get it.
