I haven't posted much in the past few days as I have been unwell. One of the 'symptoms' is that I have had absolutely no interest in CM whilst in that condition. I am recovering physically and rediscovering my taste for CM as I write this, and just ordered the above long-pondered-upon disc to celebrate.

Another absolute gem is the Cancao do Amor. It was originally one of the numbers in his Suite: Floresta do Amazonas and works with just the bare guitar and flute.

On occasion I stumble on a performer or group of performers who really impress me and have me determined to acquire more of their recordings, the likes of Clara Haskil, Quatuor Mosaïques and the Quartetto Italiano immediately spring to mind. A new one -- for me at any rate -- is the Freiburger Barockorchester and as I find the instrumental music of JS Bach simply irresistible I just had to get these two CDs:

And now for more Baroque music, this delightful box set includes my first recording of Handel's Messiah:

My first hearing of Tokarev was of Bach in a collection from the Ruhr Piano Festival. I really liked his light, nimble playing and ordered this disc, which I've played several times. This is an excellent recital. Especially noteworthy are the crisp, elegant playing in the Rameau and powerful sonority at times in the Gaspard de la nuit and the Franck, but I've found everything here most enjoyable.

Restored by Dutton, these outstanding late 1940's/early 1950's readings of Nielsen's Symphonies by the Danish State Orchestra are deeply felt and sound magnificent in their new incarnations. If you love Nielsen, snap up these incendiary historical readings.

This is indeed an excellent disc, full of nuance and fine playing always in service to the music. A treasure I will return to frequently. Congratulations Farhan & Nadejda on a truly fine release!

Interesting stuff on first listen, including a 2005/6 Clarinet Concerto worth investigating.

Boulez´s Daphnis is absolutely marvelous, in fact I think it´s one of the best post-Monteux versions. It´s a warm, sensuous and super sexy reading that contradicts the idea that he is too cerebral and cold for this music, and the playing of the BPO is heavenly. In digital sound it´s probably the best version.

Will do arthound. I've heard just one other United Archives disc, a 1946 Schubert #9 with Walter, and the transfer was of very good quality.

I have, and enjoy his Mass for St Anthony of Padua... like I said before, I like all the French music I''ve heard .. up to and including Berlioz..

seriously, if I put Radio 3 on randomly in the car and they are playing a piece of music I don't care for very much... 9 times out of 10, it will be French and at least 5 times out of 10 it will be Debussy... :?

I bought two copies of this set, one for me and the second for my brother; it will accompany the Mahler, Schubert, Vivaldi and Jazz CDs that I have for him. He is growing fond of Bach's piano music so I am always glad to lend a helping hand. :D

I feel I should point out that I'll be getting no new music whatsoever this christmas... the infamous shelf is positively bulging with new music which is scheduled to last me until Easter as it is... I really daren't encourage anyone to attempt to add to it...

The selection from me above should be the last significant haul this year - certainly until after the 25th. I have a few of this years CM releases on my Christmas list so I may be in luck on the big day! :)
