This is interesting music. Concerti for cello, flute, and clarinet, all very well played and conducted. The recording is crystal-clear with a natural balance. Five stars on all counts.

In "Rigoletto," murder is committed onstage in full view of the audience, and the murderer gets away with it. What message does that send? Actually, neither the murder nor the smoking sends any kind of "message."

I recently obtained a a 10 CD box set: Corelli: Complete Works { Brilliant Classics 92403}. The artists are Pieter-Jan Belder and Musica Amphion using period instruments. It is another excellent bargain issue by this company. The enclosed notes are very sketchy, but if that isn't an issue, then this is a very good buy at a reasonable price.

I got the Brilliant Classics collection of Lyadov: Complete Piano Works 94155. It features Marco Rapetti in the solo items and he is joined by Akane Makita as second player in pieces for four hands with Giampaolo Nuti and Daniele de Santis in 8 hand works. It is a very enjoyable set which gives great pleasure. The works are all miniatures and {as Rapetti says} even the less inspired pieces have some musical interest.

The piano works are spread over five CDs and there is an additional CDRom with notes by the performer and a collection of images.

Thanks for the recommendation, I have often considered getting that set, I might do so now.

I've found these performances very enjoyable.

BTW thanks very much for that recommendation of the Brahms/Karajan German Requiem. It's a work with which I'm not sufficiently familiar and as I've always enjoyed Karajan's performances of the Brahms Symphonies, this sounds like an excellent choice.

I downloaded a collection of Clementi sonatas and preludes played by Andreas Staier. Clementi is a composer I know little enough about but so far I find his piano music engaging.

I worked hard at listening to Rilling's (as well as Brilliant Classics') interpretations of the cantatas, but never grew fond of them. For some reason the soundscape shaped by Harnoncourt really pulls me into listening deeper to the cantatas. I am already getting quite fond of them, but there is a long way to wander. We all seem to differ so much in how we enjoy these types of works. That is what makes recommendations a bit tricky at times....... You are a Suzuki devotee, right?

Yup, Suzuki and Herreweghe especially, plus I have hundreds of individual Cantata discs...

Yup, Suzuki and Herreweghe especially, plus I have hundreds of individual Cantata discs...

Herreweghe's Bach is wonderful, it is spiritually uplifting; Suzuki's Bach, while it is beautifully recorded, is clean, sterile and uninvolving I feel. I would much prefer Herreweghe and Gardiner but that's just me.

These are all live recordings from the late '30s, aren't they? I didn't know there was a complete Beethoven symphony cycle from Mengelberg. The Mahler and Strauss reflect Mengelberg's personal artistic relationship with the composers - "Ein Heldenleben," not in this collection, is dedicated to him - and his very individual style suits their works in what I think is a revelatory way. With Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, it's a problem. But I'll be interested in what you think when you've heard them.

The Beethoven cycle was first issued on Philips LPs in the late 1970s. I almost bought it, but the price was too much for my budget at that time. It was re-issued on 6 single CDs in the late 1980s or early 1990s and I have those.

The performances were part of a Beethoven cycle Mengelberg conducted in 1940. The recording of the Eroica, however, was either lost or destroyed. On LP and CD, his 1932 commercial recording for Telefunken was used to complete the cycle (in a poor transfer). I suspect the same recording is being used here as well, but I'm curious to learn if the missing performance or a different broadcast recording has been issued instead.

I do not have the set yet. I found this info on the web. Eroica appears to be a recording from 1940.

Thanks for the details. The Concertgebouw Orchestra was one of the great orchestras of the world at the time, not just by the usual criteria but also because they were able to execute Mengelberg's tempo changes, accels and ralls (which John Wiser once described as "unmotivated," justifiably) without losing it.

I have just downloaded Bach's Goldberg Variations played by Wanda Landowska. These are transfers made by F. Reeder at a very high quality MP3 bitrate from the original 78RPM recordings made by Landowska in 1945. Possibly because of the capacity limitations of the 78RPM disc, she doesn't take the repeats. I suspect that her harpsichord wouldn't be a period instrument but certainly she is able to use wonderful colouration and plays with bravura.

The best news is that the download is completely free {and legal} at Internet Archive at this address:

I'm hoping to reap Chailly's and the Gewandhausorchester's recording of the Brahms Symphonies this Christmas. I gave my wife a really, really obvious hint when we were in Leipzig a couple of weeks ago. Anyone already have a listen to this set?

Oh, and that's my 2500th post. Crazy. Probably about my 10th post in the last two or three years, but still enjoy to pop in here from time to time and lurk around. What a great resource the Classical Music Guide Forums are!

Hi Ken,

Whether or not you like this set will depend on how you like your Brahms. Short version is, if you are in the Toscanini/Reiner camp, you'll enjoy this set. If you prefer Furtwangler or Jochum, you likely will not.

I just received the set of Canadian discs referred to in my prior post, three posts back. I opened box number 1 and started with disc number 4 -- Music of Jacques Hetu. Great sounds. Already worth the price of the entire collection (and still cheaper than a concert ticket).

The disc features the haunting Symphony No. 3 (from 1971), a guitar concerto (from 1994), a trumpet concerto (1987), and a colorful set of orchestral variations titled Antinomie (1977). The music is all modernistic, but not the grating experimental stuff at all. Some delicious sounds and intriguing orchestrations.

The Symphony is for the most part "dark", spikey at times, and tends towards a slow unfolding, though the final movement is a bit quick. There's no mistaking the accessible guitar concerto or trumpet concerto as works by someone else -- the same "haunting, dark" environ possesses those works. I found them enjoyable, if not party music you'd want to dance to. The final work, the variations, is perhaps the darkest and most modernistic of the four pieces. All in all, a wonderful mood setter.

If the remainder of the discs are anything like the Hetu disc, I made a great buy. (Again, four volumes, five discs each, each disc featuring a different Canadian composer.)
