Abbado seems to do no wrong. No, I haven't. I have another batch of Bernstein's offering of the same on which I haven't yet cracked the plastic. How do you manage to keep up with all these purchases yourself, if you don't mind me asking?Seán wrote:Have you listened to the Abbado/COE London Symphonies then? they are truly magnificent.slofstra wrote:There is a budget EMI box of the late (London) Haydn symphonies with Eugene Jochum. That's a fair summation of the maestro. Henry, I don't mind, I don't have a vey large collection, I only have about 1,300 classical CDS and I go through phases of listening to say, Mahler, Haydn, or Beethoven for months on end and familiarising myself with the different recordings in my collection and then concentrating on those that I like more than others.slofstra wrote:Abbado seems to do no wrong. I will be interested in your thoughts on that one SeánSeán wrote:
Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
I have a similar number, less if you're counting titles only (multi-CD sets as "1"). If you had 1500 CDs and played 2 a day, foreground listening which is 2 hours plus, it would take 2 years to listen to them all. I don't even listen as much as that, because I attend live performance, also read, not to mention a number of other activities. Is there an optimum collection size based on time available to listen? I know the answer will be entirely different for those professionally involved in music, or like chalkie, can play music while working, or for those who are retired. You know the old adage, about your eyes being bigger than your stomach. I feel that applies musically. 'Course I'm not knocking that, but it is a reality.Seán wrote: That's a fair summation of the maestro. This recording hardly needs any recommendation, it´s quite simply the best and an object lesson on how to ENUNCIATE Monteverdi. The glorious diction of the Concerto Italiano singers is sheer delight.Fergus wrote:

Gluck´s orchestral music is not really up there with his operas, but the Don Juan ballet is enjoyable.Fergus wrote:
The Gardiner recording served well for decades, but perhaps the slightly more recent Tafelmusik/SONY version is just a little better played.

Thank you for that Pepe. I was sort of using the Don Juan as a forerunner to one or two of his operasjosé echenique wrote:Gluck´s orchestral music is not really up there with his operas, but the Don Juan ballet is enjoyable.Fergus wrote:

This is the belated Western premiere in 1962 of Shostakovich IV, stunningly conducted by Rozhdestvensky, proving his credentials as a great symphony conductor. The sound is also very good, certainly equal to Ormandy's premiere recording in Philadelphia made the following year. Outstanding!

I have that set for a while Darren and I really like it. I think that it is a very good cycle with Nos. 4 & 5 being particularly strong. I look forward to reading your views on it in due course.bombasticDarren wrote:

I do enjoy the HvK/BPO recordings I have of Strauss music so if Reiner can't convince me of the merits of the quality of other aspects of his music then no one can.Fergus wrote:I don't know Seán, perhaps, based on previous conversations with you, he is just not for you....yet.Seán wrote:I will have to collect a few more Dickie Strauss dsics, I don't even have the Reiner/CSO complete set on Sony.

Sylvia McNair has one of the most beautiful soprano voices on record. She's also one of the few classical artists who can do crossover material with the naturalness of a pop artist.Fergus wrote:So it comes with a recommendation then Darren, knowing my soft spot for JEGbombasticDarren wrote: I really like this set, I hope you get round to hearing it:-

Oh Darren, I am looking forward to learning what you think of that set. I love the Vänskä/Lahti approach to the Sibelius symphonies, would Vänskä have been better served by the Minnesota Orchestra in Nielsen's symphonies, I wonder. Anyway, enjoy and do please let me know what you think of them.bombasticDarren wrote:

Thanks Darren. I have been meaning to pick it up a long time and when Presto had a sale of the Gemini series I ordered it. I had a listen to some of it today and liked what I heard. I am also hoping to get Barbirolli's Brahms cycle with the same orchestra - at the moment I only have the third which is one of my favourite recordings of the work.bombasticDarren wrote:That's set was my introduction to Brahms (I think ). I have seen 2 and 3 on a Royal Classics CD and presume 1 & 4 are on another. It would be good if they could be remastered and packed up as a set. I have the third in the recent EMI box set of his 'great' recordings. I wasn't expecting much from it at all and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.bombasticDarren wrote:I have never come across Barbirolli recording Brahms' symphonies - are they available on Royal Classicsarthound wrote:Thanks Darren. I have sourced the whole Royal Classics set on amazon.co.uk for a reasonable price. When my next financial windfall occurs I shall order them (he says as he feverishly adds old university textbooks onto his Amazon seller account ).
