Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
Actually, Jared, I have been involved in heavy piano work, recitals, etc. My soprano sister is up from Atlanta and giving a recital this Sunday (June 14, 2009), of which I am participating with an accordion obbligato in a piece, preparation of the Steinway and recording the concert. IMAGINE! It's been 45 years since I've touched a squeeze box. I've also been involved in recording live recitals. But I continue to look in on CMGers as much as possible. What's the saying: "You have to make hay while the sunshines!"

I just purchased EMI's Pablo Casals 9cd Box, I had all his recording in a Japanese "Art of Pablo Casals" box that I bought in the early nineties, it will be good to hear these groundbreaking recordings again...

Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
Guarneri Quartet, complete Beethoven Quartets. I have this same set of recordings (originally on Philips) on German "Eloquence" which has been processed with "AMSI" (Ambient Surround Imaging). From what I've been able to find out from the internet this is some sort of phony surround sound simulation system which seems to muck up to recording. I'm hoping the Brilliant Classics release presents the recordings in their pristine state.

While I agonise over whether I should get the Fischer or the Dorati Haydn box sets I have decided to try the 7 CD set below of Bruno Weil with the Tafelmusik ensemble on period instruments.

Dorati or Fisher? Not everyone needs that much Haydn. Consider these gems:

Thanks nut-job I had a conversation with a self confessed "Haydn nut" earlier today and he recommended Fischer and Harnoncourt, in fact he loves Harnoncourt.

I just opened up Magdalena Kozena's new Handel CD, and what a revelation! Loved every piece on it: she's full of dramatic flourishes and exaggerations without ever going over the top, that bring the music to life: this is not intellectualized Handel, by any means. Lively, spontaneous, and pinpoint accurate singing in runs and flourishes, she's got a glorious voice and knows exactly how to use it for maximum effect. IOW, I enjoyed this album tremendously.

I have been treating myself to a 'Beethoven Piano Concerto' day today... I'm comparing the Harnoncourt/ Aimard set with the Leitner/ Kempff disk... love them both, actually...
Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
I don't have that particular recording, but you will NEVER go wrong with Tafelmusik. Once I hear their rendition of something it becomes a benchmark for anything else I hear. For example, their Mozart Requiem, Jupiter Symphony, German Dances, Haydn's Die Schopfung, Bach's Brandenburgs. In the Mozart pieces, obviously there are other good recordings, but no one can touch either Die Schopfung or their Brandenburgs.Seán wrote:While I agonise over whether I should get the Fischer or the Dorati Haydn box sets I have decided to try the 7 CD set below of Bruno Weil with the Tafelmusik ensemble on period instruments.

Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
Great Pianists • Louis Kentner
1938-1951 recordings
Audio restoriation: Marina and Victor Ledin; Anthony Casuccio, mastering engineer
Naxos 8.111223
Walton/Kentner: Facade Valse (r.1939)
Liszt: Csardas Macabre (r.1951)
Liszt: En Reve (Nocturne) (r.1951)
Balakirev: Sonata in B-flat Minor (1905) (r.1949)
Chopin: Bolero in C, Op. 19 (r.1949)
Liszt: Venizia e Napoli: Gondoliera; Tarantella (r.1938)
Liszt/Lambert: Dante Sonata w/Sadler's Wells Orchestra, Constant Lambert, conductor (r.1940)
Kentner, one of the great ones! Seems to be a resurgence of interest in his work over the last half-dozen years or so.

Ah, The Truffles, my favourite chocolates, they go down a treat whilst listening to Baroque Chamber Music...slofstra wrote:I don't have that particular recording, but you will NEVER go wrong with Tafelmusik. Once I hear their rendition of something it becomes a benchmark for anything else I hear. For example, their Mozart Requiem, Jupiter Symphony, German Dances, Haydn's Die Schopfung, Bach's Brandenburgs. In the Mozart pieces, obviously there are other good recordings, but no one can touch either Die Schopfung or their Brandenburgs.

Great Pianists • Artur Schnabel
Naxos 8.110664, Mono, 61:34
Restoration Engineer: Mark Obert-Thorn
Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15
London Philharmonic Orchestra, George Szell, conductor (r.1938, London)
Brahms: Intermezzo in E-flat, Op. 117/1 (r.1947); Intermezzo in a, Op. 116/2 (r.1947); Rhapsody in g, Op. 79/2 (r.1947)
Have these on original EMI CDs, however Obert-Thorn has done a superb job in these transfers. I already had the Naxos of Piano Concerto No. 2 - also superb.

Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67
Eleanor Roosevelt, narrator/Boston Symphony Orchestra/Serge Koussevitzky, conductor (r.1950)
Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 43
Boston Symphony Orchestra, Serge Koussevitzky, conductor (r.1950)
This was Koussevitzky's final recording for RCA - superbly remastered by Mark Obert-Thorn and, for me, one of the finest recordings of the Sibelius Second Symphony I have ever heard. It is throbbing, this performance, especially the final two movements. The BSO never sounded better!

Great Pianists • Josef Hoffman (1876-1957)
Acoustic recordings - 1916-1923
Naxos 8.111326, Mono, 75:05
Restoration: Mark Obert-Thorn
Chopin, Liszt, Schubert/Liszt, Mendelssohn, Moszkowski, Paderewski, Rachmaninoff
All recorded in NYC.
Anybody interested in historical pianists will want to have these very early recordings of Hofmann, a one-of-a-kind pianist.
