Well, VAI issued only the first four volumes of Hofmann. The balance were issued by Marston Records, five additional volumes in all. Do you have the Marstons as well?

The Choral Art of Alexander Sveshnikov (choral conductor)
Sergei Rachmaninoff
Vespers, Op. 37
State Academic Russian Choir, USSR
Alexander Sveshnikov, conductor
Melodiya 1001365, 65:19, ADD
Recorded in 1965

I have searched for this one a LONG time. My original was issued on an Angel/Melodiya 2-LP set many years ago. It's probably the finest performance of this work ever recorded. Sveshnikov was a master choral conductor of the first rank. I thank Serge Boldireff for putting him on to me years and years ago. Boldireff, himself, sang with the Don Cossack Choir under Serge Jaroff and can be heard in some recordings with that master.

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone
Gerald Moore, piano
The Salzburg Lieder Recitals, 1956-1965
Orfeo 339 050, 11 CDs, Mono, ADD

I had to to think about really getting this 10-CD set, with one bonus (free) disc included. I didn't have to think long, however. It's a bit of an investment, but a most worthwhile one from what I've heard so far. We have an opportunity to hear a younger Fischer-Dieskau from 1956 to most matured in 1965. A big bonus, of course, is having Gerald Moore as your assisting artist. What a pianist!

CD 1: Schubert Schwanengesant; Schumann: Dichterliebe
CD 2: Schubert Favourite Lieder
CD 3: Brahms Four Serious Songs; Favourite Lieder
CD 4: Schumann: 12 Lieder, Op. 35; Liederkreis, Op. 39
CD 5: Wolf: Goethe Lieder
CD 6: Wolf Mörike Lieder
CD 7: Busoni/Mahler/Pfitzner/R. Strauss Favourite Lieder
CD 8: Schubert: Favourite Lieder
CD 9: Brahms: Die schöne Magelone + lieder
CD 10: Beethoven: An die ferne Geliebte; Goethe Lieder; 6 Lieder, Op. 48
CD 11 [bonus]: Wolf: Spanish Song Book; Weltliche Lieder w/Irmgard Seefried, soprano
Erik Werba, piano; Fischer-Dieskau, baritone; Gerald Moore, piano

All recordings are mono, however they are well recorded in superb acoustics in Salzburg, with an excellent balance between voice and piano. Full, most interesting notes, included.

Two NAXOS discs of music by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford [1852]1924], who seems to also be enjoying a resurgence of interest in his work.

[1] Naxos 8.570416: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 129; Fantasies Nos. 1 and 2 for Clarinet and String Quartet; Three Intermezzi for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 13; Piano Trio No. 3, Op. 158
Robert Plane, clarinet - Gould Piano Trio (Lucy Gould, violin, Alice Neary, cello; Benjamin Frith, piano)

[2] Naxos 8.570356: Symphony #1 in B-flat Major; Clarinet Concerto, Op. 80
Robert Plane, clarinet; Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; David Lloyd-Jones, conductor

Some world premieres on 8.570416!

ITALIAN FESTIVAL
CSR Symphony Orchestra-Bratislava
Ondrej Lenard, conductor
1989 recording

Massenet: Neapolitan Scenes
Godard: Italian Scenes
Liszt: Tarantelle
Mendelssohn: Song of the Venetian Gondolier
Leoncavallo: Mattinata
Cui: Tarantelle
Charpentier: Impressions d'Italie (No. 5 - Naples)
Gounod: Saltarello
Denza: Funiculi, funicula

The big interest here, for me, are the Godard and Cui pieces. Hard to believe this is still around having been issued in 1989.

Described by Nathan Milstein as 'the greatest American-trained violinist,', Joseph Fuchs had an immensely long career continuing to give recitals at Carnegie Hall untill he was 93.'

Beethoven: Complete Violin and Piano Sonatas (10)
Joseph Fuchs, violin
Artur Balsam, piano

VOLUME 1 - Naxos 8.111251
Sonatas 1, 2, 3, and 4 from American Decca recordings made in 1952 at Pythian Temple, New York, NY

VOLUME 2 - Naxos 8.111252
Sonatas 5 ("Spring"), 6, and 7 from American Decca recordings made in 1952 at Pythian Temple, New York, NY

VOLUME 3 - Naxos 8.111253
Sonatas 8, 9 ("Kreutzer"), and 10 from American Decca recordings made in 1952 at Pythian Temple, New York, NY

All restored by Marina and Victor Ledin; Antohony Cassucio, mastering engineer

Of these performances, Harold C. Schoenberg wrote: "Fuchs and Balsam make a magnificent team ... Both instrumentalists scorn effects of a superficial nature and probe directly to the music's bone. These are strong, powerful, thoughtful performances that have the added virtue of being technicall impeccable."

Lithuanian pianist, Muza Rubackyte's Franck recital on a 2008 Brilliant Classics disk. She plays as if it were Liszt and it works. The most interesting Franck piano disk I've ever heard.
Muza Rubackyte's hearty, rhetorical handling of Franck's thickly textured piano writing evokes her similar mastery in Liszt, which is a good thing. While her sonority is richer than the top-heavy, occasionally strident engineering suggests, Rubackyte's true feeling for nuance and linear projection emerges at all times, from the Final's torrential octaves to the Variation's running busy counterpoint against the right hand's broken chords. Rubackyte's red-blooded virtuosity never sacrifices musical perception, and easily holds its own alongside different interpretive vantage points, be it Yukie Nagai's suave calm in the Prelude, Aria et Final's outer movements, or the limpid, ravishing tonal refinement Hough, Perahia, Moravec, and Richter bring to the Prelude, Chorale et Fugue. In short, Rubackyte's artistic excellence and Brilliant Classics' rock-bottom price recommend themselves.

The Swiss-Hungarian soprano, Maria Stader (1911-1999) one of DGG's most celebrated artists in the 1950s and '60s, is featured in this uplifting Christmas album. Favourite carols from Germany, France and England ... with Stader's bell-like purity and youthful freshness matched by the Munich Boys' Choir - are coupled with Mozart: the ravishing "Laudate" aria from the Solemn Vespers and Stader's benchmark recording of the glorious Christmas motet Exsultate jubilate. I have the original stereo LP recording [136 266] of the disc, but the CD transfers are first-class in every respect. No texts, however.

"In Dulci Jubilo" - 18 European Christmas Songs
Maria Stader, soprano
Hedwig Bilgram, organ
Munich Boys Choir - and instrumental ensemble

Mozart selections (mentioned above):
RIAS Kammerchor
Wolfgang Meyer, organ; Helmut Heller, solo violin
Radio Symphony Orchestra-Berlin
Ferenc Fricsay, conductor

Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835)
I Capuleti e i Montecchi (complete opera)
Anna Netrebko, Tiziano Bracci, Elina Caranca, Joseph Calleja, Robert Gleadow
Vienna Singakademie
Vienna Symphony
Fabio Luisi, conductor
DGG 477 8031, 2 CDs, 76:10, 51:26, DDD

After such high praise from CMGers with this one, and since I love this opera, it became a must-have! Critical acclaim for this live recording of the masterpiece that so profoundly impressed Wagner: "Accompanied by the inspired Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Fabio Luisi, Netrebko as Giuletta and Garanca as Romeo, delivered a thrilling display of bel canto at its most beautiful. Together with the brilliant Joseph Calleja as Tebaldo, the two divas sang as Bellini himself demanded, 'evoking tears' from the audience, who responded with a 15-minute standing ovation." —(Deutsche Presse-Agentur) [Live recording, April 2008]

Near as I know, there have not been many "solo" issues of the late soprano, GHENA DIMITROVA (1941-2005). Hence the following CD for a future radio tribute to the soprano. Another CD issued was on Sony [42174] of arias from Tchaikovsky operas with Pesko conducting.

Opera arias of Puccini and Verdi
Ghena Dimitrova, soprano
Philharmonia Orchestra, Anton Guadagno, conductor (in most)
Munich Radio Orchestra in Verdi Macbeth excerpts with Lamberto Gardelli, conductor

EMI 41437, 74:49, DDD

Josef Myslivecek (1737-1781]
Overture in A
Sinfonia in F
Sinfonia in C
Sinfonia in G
Sinfonia E-flat
Sinfonia in C
Concertino in E-flat for Two Horns, Two Transverse Flutes, Two Clarinets, Bassoon & Strings

Concerto Köln
Werner Ehrhardt, conductor

DGG-Archiv 477 6418, DDD, 67:17

Multi-award-winning Concerto Köln, "those wonderful early-musickers in Cologne" (The New York Times), perform the unjustly neglected symphonies of Josef Myslivecek, one of the most successful composers of his day and a close friend of Mozart, whose style he influenced. Listening to this deightfully inventive, suavely lyrical and subtly textured music, "it is easy to see why Mozart admired his friend's fire, spirit and life." —Grammophone

I have to thank my friends on CMG for putting me on to GIULIANO CARMIGNOLA! I've been on a binge with his recordings.

Lately:

DGG Archiv B0003849 [474 8952], 65:56, DDD

Vivaldi: Concerto for Violin & Strings ("in due cori") in B-flat Major

Locatelli: Concerto for Violin G, Op. 3/9
Tartini: Concerto for Violin, Strings and Continue in A

Giuliano Carmignola, violin
Venice Baroque Orchestra
Andrea Marcon, conductor

"With these stunningly virtuosic Baroque violin concertos, which bring one back to 18-century Venice, Giuliano Carmignola, Andrea Marcon and his Venice Baroque Orchestra 'reach the listeners' heart before his ears.'" —Los Angeles Times

As recommended by nut-job: Harnoncourt's Haydn symphonies:

Now should I get Immerseel or Harnoncourt's Beethoven cycle, I wonder?

I don't have that particular recording, but you will NEVER go wrong with Tafelmusik. Once I hear their rendition of something it becomes a benchmark for anything else I hear. For example, their Mozart Requiem, Jupiter Symphony, German Dances, Haydn's Die Schopfung, Bach's Brandenburgs. In the Mozart pieces, obviously there are other good recordings, but no one can touch either Die Schopfung or their Brandenburgs.
It is a great box set, I love it.

They are both very good, Harnoncourt's was in a Box with the Concerto's too, but that no longer seems to be the case...I say Immerseel... :D

They are very different, Harnoncourt's with modern instruments, although an HIP mindset, and Immerseel being with a very small ensemble of original instruments. I find Harnoncourt to be a more convincing view of the works, with Immerseel providing a welcome iconoclastic counter-viewpoint.

If the Harnoncout's Symphony/Concerto Box was still available I was going to recommend that, but I figured Sean might enjoy a fresh and new point of view, for modern Instruments I recommend Vanska's recently completed set with the Minnesota Orchestra, or Haitink's Live Set with the LSO...Harnoncourt's Dvorak (and Bruckner) is also very fine...

I came home to some unsolicited mail that will bring great pleasure: three CDs involving Opera Australia stars (recently retired bass Bruce Martin, the second CD alas mostly show tunes), tenor Rosario la Spina, and soprano Emma Matthews. The latter, I believe, is destined to make a real mark on the world - lovely voice, fabulous control, great acting, in roles from Rosina (Barber) to Lulu to Handel.
Also a reissue of the Sutherland-Pavarotti-Bonynge Lucia, Magdalena Kozena singing Vivaldi, Harry Christophers and the 16 doing religious songs, Spanish music by a guitar quartet, and opera choruses by the Queensland Opera. Some good listening coming up there.

Lance:

You may remember that in the early days of CDs, Chant du monde issued a partial recording of Svechnikov's Rachmaninov Vespers (1986?), run off directly from the Melodiya tapes. Sadly, they left out the last three numbers for unknown reasons. I too have loved this release since its first appearance on the Angel/Melodiya LPs in the 1960's. Thanks for pointing out the latest incarnation which will, hopefully, be complete this time.

The Chant du monde release contained 12 tracks: the complete Vespers has 15 numbers.

There is also one on Stradivarius, I do not own it, but, I have about three of the Opus 2 Sinfonias on Multi Composer discs, I like Albinoni a lot too, he was certianly not the One Hit Wonder that most people think he is...I am always prepared to give Zig Zag discs a chance based on their track record, do you have their Rimsky/Scheherazade by Immerseel, also his readings of the Liszt Tone Poems...another great volume of exquisite Chamber Music is the Marais disc, Les Folies D'espagne by the Ensemble Spirale, and to finish up the recently released Bach piano disc by Edna Stern... :D

A new solo disc from Sara Sant'Ambrogio:

Image

Cello collectors on CMG may not be aware of this new disc. Beautifully recorded, Ms. Sant'Ambrogio plays a marvelous Gofriller cello, both sweet on the high end and very robust on the low. The Prélude to Suite No. 5 is arresting. She also plays the Suite No. 1 a bit slower than usual--to I think better effect. The final Gigue emphasizes liveliness rather than speed. A superb disc and a top-tier choice in these Suites. Hopefully a second disc will be released to complete the set.

"Aus Flügeln des Gesangs" [On Wings of Song]

•Mendelssohn/Liszt: On Wings of Song
•Variations sérieuses, Op. 54
•Schumann: Fantasie in C, Op. 17
•Liszt: Die Loreley [arr. Liszt for solo piano]
•Mahler/Tanski: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen [Songs of a Wayfarer] [transcribed by Tanski]
Claudius Tanski, 1901 Steinway Concert Grand Piano
Dabringhaus und Grimm 912 1489, 67:42, DDD [SACD]

Tanski, who studied with Alfred Brendel, is proving to be QUITE some pianist. I have been fascinated with his art for some time now and have not been disappointed. Thoroughly enjoyable CD to hear, even in NON-SACD sound! More about this CD later. The inspiration for this album is most interesting

More PREISER delights ...

Helen Traublel (soprano), Volume 2

•11 Wagner excerpts (Flying Dutchman, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde, Die Walküre, Götterdämmerung, Parsifal all with the RCA Victor Orchestra, Frieder Weissmann, conductor (r.1950, RCA Victor)
•Arias from Mozart's Don Giovanni, Verdi's Aida and Otello, and Ponchielli's La Gioconda
all with Orchestra conducted by Charles O'Connell (r.1946, American Columbia)

How I wish Preiser would issue some of her SONG recitals on both, RCA and American Columbia. Dated material, but wonderfully done.

TCHAIKOVSKY

•Symphony No. 1 in g, Op. 13 {"Winter Dreams"} (r. 1961) [41:01]
•Romeo & Juliet Overture-Fantasia (r. 1963) [19:54]
Prague Symphony Orchestra
Václav Smetácek, conductor

Supraphon 3895, Stereo, ADD

The first-ever recording I heard of "Winter Dreams" was this recording, which came out either on an Artia or Parliament LP. I was hooked on this music, which turns out to be my favourite of Tchaikovsky's first three symphonies. I've never heard a version I like better and am delighted Supraphon issued it on CD in 2006.

Thanks, John, I had been looking at this disc... :D
You're welcome!

Another recent acquisition is a set played by Nathaniel Rosen:

Image

The copy I found is second-hand. It too is beautifully recorded, and I enjoy the elegance of his playing.

If you have this set and Ms. Sant'Ambrogio's disc, you can compare two of the great cello makers, Mateo Gofriller and Domenico Montagnana. Gofrillers have a robust, extroverted sound while the Montagnanas tend to be a tiny bit sweeter.

OK, I thought I'd share with you all, exactly where I am...

recently, I have been busy purchasing SECOND versions of a number of my favourite works, and attempting to compare them with the ones I originally had, in terms of production, performance, orchestration and style... in order to improve my development and understanding... :D

So, I have originally had the following in my collection:

Beethoven Violin Concerto: Mutter/ Masur
Bruckner Complete Symphonies: Jochum/ Dresden
Sibelius Violin Concerto: Previn/ Mutter
Holst The Planets: Karajan/ Berliner

and am now listening to:

Beethoven Violin Concerto: Kennedy/ Tennstedt
Bruckner Complete Symphonies: Masur/ Leipzig
Sibelius Violin Concerto: Lin/ Salonen
Holst The Planets: Elder/ Halle

next up, will be similar comparisons with:

Beethoven: Triple Concerto
Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto
Beethoven: Missa Solemnis
Mozart: Great Mass

In between times, I have new (to me) music, still on the go!... :D

Mendelssohn: Elijah: Sargent/ Liverpool
Bach: Brandenburg Concertos: Pinnock/ Eng Concert
Mozart: String Quintets: Grumaiux Trio etc
Beethoven: Piano Concertos: Aimard & Harnoncourt / Kempff & Leitner

phew... I'm exhausted!!
