Well, VAI issued only the first four volumes of Hofmann. The balance were issued by Marston Records, five additional volumes in all. Do you have the Marstons as well?

I have searched for this one a LONG time. My original was issued on an Angel/Melodiya 2-LP set many years ago. It's probably the finest performance of this work ever recorded. Sveshnikov was a master choral conductor of the first rank. I thank Serge Boldireff for putting him on to me years and years ago. Boldireff, himself, sang with the Don Cossack Choir under Serge Jaroff and can be heard in some recordings with that master.

A big bonus, of course, is having Gerald Moore as your assisting artist. What a pianist!

Lithuanian pianist, Muza Rubackyte's Franck recital on a 2008 Brilliant Classics disk. She plays as if it were Liszt and it works. The most interesting Franck piano disk I've ever heard.

Muza Rubackyte's hearty, rhetorical handling of Franck's thickly textured piano writing evokes her similar mastery in Liszt, which is a good thing. While her sonority is richer than the top-heavy, occasionally strident engineering suggests, Rubackyte's true feeling for nuance and linear projection emerges at all times, from the Final's torrential octaves to the Variation's running busy counterpoint against the right hand's broken chords. Rubackyte's red-blooded virtuosity never sacrifices musical perception, and easily holds its own alongside different interpretive vantage points, be it Yukie Nagai's suave calm in the Prelude, Aria et Final's outer movements, or the limpid, ravishing tonal refinement Hough, Perahia, Moravec, and Richter bring to the Prelude, Chorale et Fugue. In short, Rubackyte's artistic excellence and Brilliant Classics' rock-bottom price recommend themselves.

The Swiss-Hungarian soprano, Maria Stader (1911-1999) one of DGG's most celebrated artists in the 1950s and '60s, is featured in this uplifting Christmas album. Favourite carols from Germany, France and England ... with Stader's bell-like purity and youthful freshness matched by the Munich Boys' Choir - are coupled with Mozart: the ravishing "Laudate" aria from the Solemn Vespers and Stader's benchmark recording of the glorious Christmas motet Exsultate jubilate. I have the original stereo LP recording [136 266] of the disc, but the CD transfers are first-class in every respect. No texts, however.

I don't have that particular recording, but you will NEVER go wrong with Tafelmusik. Once I hear their rendition of something it becomes a benchmark for anything else I hear. For example, their Mozart Requiem, Jupiter Symphony, German Dances, Haydn's Die Schopfung, Bach's Brandenburgs. In the Mozart pieces, obviously there are other good recordings, but no one can touch either Die Schopfung or their Brandenburgs.

It is a great box set, I love it.

They are very different, Harnoncourt's with modern instruments, although an HIP mindset, and Immerseel being with a very small ensemble of original instruments. I find Harnoncourt to be a more convincing view of the works, with Immerseel providing a welcome iconoclastic counter-viewpoint.

If the Harnoncout's Symphony/Concerto Box was still available I was going to recommend that, but I figured Sean might enjoy a fresh and new point of view, for modern Instruments I recommend Vanska's recently completed set with the Minnesota Orchestra, or Haitink's Live Set with the LSO...Harnoncourt's Dvorak (and Bruckner) is also very fine...

I came home to some unsolicited mail that will bring great pleasure: three CDs involving Opera Australia stars (recently retired bass Bruce Martin, the second CD alas mostly show tunes), tenor Rosario la Spina, and soprano Emma Matthews. The latter, I believe, is destined to make a real mark on the world - lovely voice, fabulous control, great acting, in roles from Rosina (Barber) to Lulu to Handel.
Also a reissue of the Sutherland-Pavarotti-Bonynge Lucia, Magdalena Kozena singing Vivaldi, Harry Christophers and the 16 doing religious songs, Spanish music by a guitar quartet, and opera choruses by the Queensland Opera. Some good listening coming up there.

You may remember that in the early days of CDs, Chant du monde issued a partial recording of Svechnikov's Rachmaninov Vespers (1986?), run off directly from the Melodiya tapes. Sadly, they left out the last three numbers for unknown reasons. I too have loved this release since its first appearance on the Angel/Melodiya LPs in the 1960's. Thanks for pointing out the latest incarnation which will, hopefully, be complete this time.

The Chant du monde release contained 12 tracks: the complete Vespers has 15 numbers.

There is also one on Stradivarius, I do not own it, but, I have about three of the Opus 2 Sinfonias on Multi Composer discs, I like Albinoni a lot too, he was certianly not the One Hit Wonder that most people think he is...I am always prepared to give Zig Zag discs a chance based on their track record, do you have their Rimsky/Scheherazade by Immerseel, also his readings of the Liszt Tone Poems...another great volume of exquisite Chamber Music is the Marais disc, Les Folies D'espagne by the Ensemble Spirale, and to finish up the recently released Bach piano disc by Edna Stern...

A new solo disc from Sara Sant'Ambrogio:

Cello collectors on CMG may not be aware of this new disc. Beautifully recorded, Ms. Sant'Ambrogio plays a marvelous Gofriller cello, both sweet on the high end and very robust on the low. The Prélude to Suite No. 5 is arresting. She also plays the Suite No. 1 a bit slower than usual--to I think better effect. The final Gigue emphasizes liveliness rather than speed. A superb disc and a top-tier choice in these Suites. Hopefully a second disc will be released to complete the set.

The first-ever recording I heard of "Winter Dreams" was this recording, which came out either on an Artia or Parliament LP. I was hooked on this music, which turns out to be my favourite of Tchaikovsky's first three symphonies. I've never heard a version I like better and am delighted Supraphon issued it on CD in 2006.

Another recent acquisition is a set played by Nathaniel Rosen:

The copy I found is second-hand. It too is beautifully recorded, and I enjoy the elegance of his playing.

If you have this set and Ms. Sant'Ambrogio's disc, you can compare two of the great cello makers, Mateo Gofriller and Domenico Montagnana. Gofrillers have a robust, extroverted sound while the Montagnanas tend to be a tiny bit sweeter.
