Which conductor made recordings with the MOST ORCHESTRAS?

Post by Wallingford » Sat Feb 20, 2010 9:51 pm

Here's a fun little game. You need only a minimum of knowledge of recordings to play it. You can entlist the aid of the Arkivmusic site to assist you.

Be careful, though, as many of the ensembles listed therein are CHORAL GROUPS featured on the same recordings with orchestra (Beethoven's Ninth, for instance)....remember, it must in the parameters of this thread's title. And try to draw upon your knowledge of live recordings--private, bootleg, airchecks, etc.

My big entries are men who seemingly left recordings with just about every conceivable major orchestra. First, there's

PIERRE MONTEUX:
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
BBC Northern Symphony
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Boston Chamber Ensemble
Boston Symphony Orchestra
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Colonne Concerts Orchestra
Copenhagen Chamber Orchestra
Danish State Radio Orchestra
French National Orchestra
French Radio & TV Orchestra

London Philharmonic Orchestra
London Symphony Orchestra
Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra

without checking the Arkiv listings, I was going to guess Dorati and Monteux as 2 top contenders...there may be some others as well.

The Stadium Symphony Orchestra was essentially the New York Philharmonic, which used to play summer concerts in Lewisohn Stadium. And the Hollywood Bowl is the summer venue of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Stokowski is probably the statistical winner, given his extremely long career, love of travel, and generally restless life. And he conducted orchestras he never recorded with, probably a great many of them.

Either he or the aforementioned Dorati would've been my educated guess; the former a seeming phenomenon of the CD age, the latter of the audiophile stereo LP. It's interesting that both spent time in Detroit...not that there's anything wrong with that.

If this was about most recorded (and most outré) repertoire, Järvi would win my vote hands down.

I believe we have to drop the Cincinnati Symphony from the Neeme Jarvi list. He has conducted the group, but the recording in question is Ravel's Pavane which is led by his son Paavo.

And, speaking of errors, did any one else note the Hyperion ad in the BBC Music Magazine claiming this to be the 300th anniversary of Chopin's birth. Are there no proof readers anymore?

I have no clue how many orchestras Zubin Mehta has conducted, but over the years and in different countries, I have heard him with many.

Perhaps, but we're talking about recordings. Though I'm sure there are others, I only know of his recordings from Los Angeles, New York, London, Vienna, Italy, and Israel. Has he ever recorded from Berlin?

He recorded Salome with Eva Marton for SONY with the Berlin Philharmonic. And add the Bayerischen Staatsorchester, he recorded with them a Die Walkúre live and a specially good Mahler III also live in Vienna (Farao Classics).

Though, in theory, Neeme DID guest-conduct in Cincinnati (family affair, of course--went both ways), and therefore, HAD to have some live recordings archived.

To Barry's Stoky list, we can add the Boston Symphony, Bergen's Harmonie (or Philharmonic), the Baltimore Symphony and the Budapest Radio Symphony.

These performances you can get thru classicalconducting.com.

And of course, he was Music Director in Cincinnati in the pre-recordings days (at least pre-orchestral recordings).

...and to Rob's list on Neeme must be added the orchestra NJ's recently been head conductor of: the HAGUE RESIDENTIE ORCH.

There've been several concerts with this combo on Live At The Concertgebouw.....I've duped one off the air which includes a terrific Sibelius Fifth.

WELL, at the time of recording (late 50s/early 60s) it WAS a force in the New York concert and American recording scenes, under the direction of its founder, Thomas Scherman. They did LPs for Columbia & RCA.

Where are you pulling this from, Barry?

I ran a quick check on our database and Stokowski is the clear winner, but with only 27 orchestras.

Oh I see, it's coming from arkivmusic. I believe they just lease the same database used by many of the radio stations.

We're working with some collectors now to add more information to our database. If you have a spreadsheet or database of recordings we're interested in "data donations" to help beef up the database. Just PM me and we can talk about it.

If you want to see what we have on file in our admittedly partial database. Go to this link: http://www.ratebach.com/Search

Type "stok" in the Performer box. Click on Stokowski. Now you can click on one composer or composition at a time to review his recordings.

Whilst many do lease that Database, which has up to 60 million Tracks, Arkiv does not...their Database is made up from the Recordings that they have for sale, as others have pointed out, Conductors often worked live with Orchestras, but, may not have recorded with them...

They did some Strauss waltzes for London (Phase 4?), and which aren't presently available according to Arkiv.

I'm pretty sure that other than the overall catalog listing, which is theirs, they pull track and performer information from a third party. I believe they're called MUZE. A bit of Googling seems to connect MUZE, All Music guide and other projects.

Yes, I agree with that because often the track listing is wrong...
