Vanessa Mae's body and classical music

Post by piston » Fri Jul 30, 2010 7:29 pm

Selling a body of classical music or a teenage-looking sexual body? As was shown on these very sites, marketing uses every trick in the book to sell something. I cannot help but wonder why doesn't Vanessa Mae have more self-respect as an artist?

Increasingly, marketers have been selling bodies rather than bodies of work. And it's very profitable for the artists:
In April 2006, Vanessa-Mae was ranked as the wealthiest young entertainer under 30 in the UK in the Sunday Times Rich List 2006.[2] having an estimated fortune of about £32 million ($64 million) stemming from concerts and record sales of over an estimated 10 million copies world wide, which is an unprecedented achievement for a young female violinist.
"You're so vain. You probably think this song is about you."

Scooped Mel (Stenka Razin) on that one, didn't you? :)

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

All my artwork is extremely tasteful. Yes, I have posted pictures of artists who are both talented and beautiful. None of the pictures I have ever posted and will continue to post are salacious or sleazy. I am utterly turned off by any artist who finds it necessary to display themselves in a cheap manner in order to sell themselves. I do not consider Vanessa Mae an artist and do not possess any of her crossover CDs.
As Chief Decorator of the CMG, I maintain high standards and stay away from provocative photographs. The last thing I will ever do is denigrate a woman. I celebrate beauty in both the physical and spiritual sense. Our forum is above Vanessa Mae's
lack of good taste and decency. I only display serious artists who also happen to be beautiful. 8)

I do agree that you are quite a decorator!
And, btw, I also find much visual satisfaction in female beauty.
There's a line, as with everything else. Hilary Hahn has not postured as a sexual object to be consumed. But a few others have and got rich in the process.

Let's try to imagine male musicians --attractive ones that is-- stripping down to earn more bucks.....
Maybe it's not such a crazy idea. Next fad in classical music?

I'd discuss her body - she's been doing this for at least 10 years, surely, since she recorded the erotic Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Ah well...she'd make someone a nice flatmate. Or flat mate...whichever.

Have a look at the Bond String quartet...

Um, they couldn't play 'air on a g-string like that.

I'm telling you it's not fair! Why can't male musicians be more ..... muscular?

Vanilla-Mae seems to have cultivated an image close to Siouxsie.

who did, um, rather keep more abreast of things but it would be imprudent to paste up
a photo so demonstrating, methinks.

The only reason she is covering her breasts with her hands is because she does not have any...

Absolutely. Hence being someone's flat mate!

No waist either.

In fact...could she be a boy?

Isn't her original name Nicolson? As far as the violinist is concerned, be she Nicolson or Nicolsoff she leaves me cold.
Cheers

The revenue figures for Vanessa Mae quoted from the Sunday Times do not seem credible. Publicists have been known to inflate these numbers.

Isn't it interesting how a thread decrying marketing on the basis of her physical attributes so quickly transforms itself into a thread consisting of comments regarding those attributes?

If you google Hilary Hahn on "Images" you'll find a bunch of photos and they're all very mature and professional. She has not bowed down to this physical-appeal-brings-more-bucks marketing idiocy. Want to see a sexy H. Hahn? There you go:

But...what attributes?

It's as if she's playing to a standard, a marketing rhetoric if you like, but she really hasn't go it. So one asks, "Is the picture actually seductive (or am I just going along with a marketing expectation that something within me is supposed to be aroused)?" I mean, is her covering of her chest supposed to tease at the hint of what might be revealed?

Instead of going "Cwahhhh!" one stares in perplexity and asks why? Hence the comments. Seduction has long been in pop marketing and if Vanessa Mae's management thinks she can bring off that tactic with that pose, they may be wrong.

Shame - she can look perfectly presentable (no doubt seductive also) but those pics do her no justice.
