Prokofiev string quartets

Post by stefanher » Wed Nov 03, 2010 3:54 am

I realised recently I hadn't listened to these since my days at university & found to my amazement that the only recording I have is an ancient one with the Vlach (?) on a budget Phillips. Can anyone recommend recent recording(s) that are worthwhilee? The Pavel Haas looks a must but there are at least 10 other performances by the likes of the Coull & the Russian quartet. No doubt somebody will tell me to buy them all...

I'd recommend the DG recording by the Emerson String Quartet.

I really like the Aurora quartet on Naxos. On the same disc there is also a recording of the very underrated cello sonata so this disc really gives good value for money. I have not heard the Emersons, but i would be surprised if they were not good considering their generally high standard of playing, not least in pieces from the 20th century.

Ditto.

Roger is right that the Cello Sonata is a fine piece, as well . . . for that work, I favor a recording by Misha Maisky and Martha Argerich.

If you can't get the classic version by Mstislav Rostropovich and Sviatoslav Richter.

For my money, the Pavel Haas quartet recording of the Prokofiev quartets on Supraphon is superior to the Emersons in every way. And I used to swear by the Emersons.

The Pavel Haas Quartet's recently released disc trumps all...
