Fascinating Saint-Saens piano trios in splendid performances

For me, the chamber works are often the most interesting works by the romantic composers of the 19th century. I haven't heard very much of Saint-Saens' music, but recently i bought his piano trios 1 and two played by the Trio Wanderer on Harmonia Mundi. I am very glad i did. These trios are very original, and that was indeed the composer's intention in one of them. He wanted that everyone who heard his second trio would regret that they did and feel despair. Luckily that is not the case. Both trios are challenging, but very enjoyable.

As expected, i can only praise the interpretation by Trio Wanderer. This is really an outstanding chamber ensemble. They have shown that in many recordings, not least in Brahms. I also own the rightfully acclaimed recordings by the Florestan trio on Hyperion (of Brahms). But the Trio Wanderer is even better.
