thanks John... I feel I have broadened my understanding quite considerably this year... but there are blanks on the above post which WILL be filled in over the next 12 months..John F wrote: You did better than most with their New Year resolutions. Well I got the Kaipainen and lots of Taneyev this past 2011. The other guys not yet. So I'll put them on my 2012 list.johnQpublic wrote:
Aspiring to hear? Yeah I hope to hear some works of Kaipainen, Taneyev, Vogler, Hoffmeister, Grisey, Roslavets and Dalbavie in 2011. But only when their prices are attractive!
There!! That was easy.

I generally tend to force myself to listen to CDs more or less in order of purchase. This means that I do not have music sitting in the unlistened to pile for too long and it also means that if I am ploughing through a box set it sometimes has the effect of slowing down further purchases until I have completed it.....doesn't always work mind youbombasticDarren wrote:It tends to be boxed sets and the odd opera that wait longest to be spun by meJared wrote:The number of unplayed disks in my collection just never seems to go down... It is a situation to which I aspire... believe you me. A certain element of ruthless self-discipline will be required during 2012, I feel...Fergus wrote:I generally tend to force myself to listen to CDs more or less in order of purchase. December 21, 2012 would be the perfect date to listen to the Verdi Requiem.Lance wrote:I neglected to mention—the first time around—I may have to postpone my listening pledge of composers to AFTER December 21, 2012.

The only thing I know I'll be listening to definitely is more of Schubert's lieder as I listen to all of them in chronological order using the Graham Johnson Hyperion Edition. I've had this set for almost a year, and I've gone through about 17 of the 37 CDs. (Each CD is a good 70-80 minutes long). It's been interesting and fun to listen to each of the CDs so far.
I plan to focus somewhat on Scandinavian composers, with a Stenhammar symphony set, a Sibelius set, and various and sundry recordings of Nielsen, Norgard and Langgard.
I also seem to have a new ear for Mozart; not sure why. So there'll be more of that, and probably a little less Schubert for now.
Other than that, I'll listen to anything and everything that strikes my fancy as the year progress.
Oh yes, Rameau.

I'd like to expand my baroque knowledge beyond Bach, Handel and Vivaldi this year.

Just the odd piece from the core repertoire that I haven't connected with yet, such as:-
Mendelssohn - Elijah
Elgar - The Dream of Gerontius
Liszt - Anees de Pelerinage
I also have couple of Verdi operas waiting to be listened to (plus Carmen )
I may have to curtail my collecting of Beethoven, Brahms and Sibelius symphony cycles

Ah, well. "Could do better" was never more apt. So, this year I pledge to polish off the above list and...Thumper wrote:*looks up*
Pah. Far too conventional. Some of you need to stretch your ears. This year, I shall acquaint myself with:
Beethoven: Symphonies, 2, 4 & 8. No.
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas 1-32 (exc. the Pathétique, Moonlight, Pastorale and Waldstein) 1-7, 21, 22-26, 28.
Beethoven: String Quartets (complete) Harp, Serioso, Razumovsky 1-3
Beethoven: Missa Solemnis Nope.
Beethoven: Mass in C Nada.
I trust that all of you are now intimidated.
Brahms: Complete Works (Brilliant Classics box set)
Mozart: Seven operas (John Eliot Gardiner box set)
Bach: Cantatas (as finances and sanity allow)
Easy!
