Jiri Belohlavek To Czech Philharmonic

Post by THEHORN » Thu Dec 23, 2010 9:51 am

The distinguished (and unpronouceable) Czech conductor Jiri Belohlavek
will succeed Eliahu Inbal as music director of the great Czech Philharmonic in 2112. He will step down from his current position with the BBC symphony that year.
Belohlavek was the orchestra's music director from 1990 to 92,and was followed by Gerd Albrecht and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
I doubt that any one could object to the choice of this outstanding conductor .
The correct pronunciation is Yeer-zhi B'yel-o-hlavek . The h is pronounced.

Inbal did not last long, he just started in 2009. Anyone know the story there?

And Zdenek Macal, the only Czech to lead the orchestra in the last 18 years. Before Gerd Albrecht, its chief conductor had always been Czech, but there seem to have been fewer prominent Czech conductors in recent years.

A wonderful choice! If my memory of the first language I learned serves me well,
the name Belohlavek actually means "white head".

This should be a good combination, again -
I've got some good Behlolavek/CzPO recordings -
the two Brahms Serenades for one; very excellent

A quite natural combination. A seasoned one, too.

He appeared as a guest conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra a few years ago, and I was very impressed.

Nearly three decades ago, he did a rather nice Mahler Tenth (in Cooke's realization) which I managed to acquire from an anonymous German reel-taping enthusiast. Too bad I couldn't hear it in stereo.

On the basis of several earlier recordings, but especially of Belohlavek's recording of Mozart's Symphonies 35 & 36 with the Prague Philharmonic (2005, Harmonia Mundi), which is astonishingly good, I'm delighted with this appointment.
