Give Lance a break, guys.
As a forum admin myself (not here), it was a reminder of how important the corporate memory of a forum is. Books on running fora mention running backups to different locations so that if one back up fails you have a back up of the back up. Books recommend you do this daily. Not that I have been that good myself at housekeeping....
Maybe I should...

If you have suggestions about how to run the forum, why don't you PM him instead of challenging his running of the forum in public. It's hard enough being an admin without this sort of thing.

I agree. Lance has done so many wonderful things with this site and if a mistake has been made I am sure he will learn from it. I also think that any suggestions/complaints are best directed to him via a PM.Sator wrote:Give Lance a break, guys.

If only you'd acknowledge I have over 3000 posts instead of my reduced number of 1608 I could forgive you! Just kidding, just kidding! Well could you give me a projection--with Chalkie leaving how long will it take me to catch him message totals!
What I can't forgive you for is not organizing more NYC forum dinners! And I won't forgive Chalkie if he leaves us! Regards, Len

If the Italians rebuilt La Fenice after it burned (and not for the first time), we can certainly do the same for the Forum. After all, we keep talking about Bruckner, Solti, Contemporary Music or Johann Sebastian Bach all the time, so sooner or later all the information will come back.

It's my opinion and I am entitled to air it, this is in Lance's Thread and I wrote it because he probably did not see the other Threads in which I announced my quitting the Site in Protest, Pepe's right, without me CMG will have no sense of humor, it will be boring and dull...just like most people consider Classical Sites and Classical Music Lovers to be...John F wrote:Yeah, lay off. Lance, thank you for giving us this forum. Though many of us lost valuable posts, life will go on. Do not worry about something that is now beyond your control. With time all will be forgotten and new and better posts will take the place of ones that sadly vanished. So are the mysterious ways that computers treat us. Here today and gone tommorow. I support you 100% my dear friend. Take us on a joyous CMG ride into the future. It starts right now,m8.

Have you seen me comment in any other Threads? anyway, I certainly don't want people thinking i'm not grateful to Lance, after all I have a great many friends here, especially Lance and Corlyss, plus, 17,000 Posts is, like, an awful lot...Resigning is to point out a problem, and it's why I have done it, CMG is awesome, we all know that...but, like a bad penny, maybe i'll show up and insult a few people/artists and their tastes again one day...arepo wrote:The one that keeps harping that he is leaving never seems to leave!

Having worked in the I/T industry for many years I've had to bear my share of disapprobation. (One of the worst was when one of my techs, this is 30 years ago, wiped out a company's inventory files by mistake, loaded the backup tape to recover, and then, instead of typing in the recovery command, issued the command to backup the now empty inventory file over top of the backup. That was a bad week.) The storms always blow by; live and learn.
And it's okay for people to vent and blow off some steam too.

What really fries my gut is that those who claim to care so much about "the disaster" have a perverse need to voice themselves online instead of privately e-mailing Lance with their disappointments.
It's called "grandstanding" to their "fans."
It lacks sincerity and tends to be hubristic.

Agreed. The last thing Lance wants on holiday, surely, is an inundation of emails and carrying on any number of dialogues about the mishap. Far better for users to comment here where others can contest a comment or expand on it, and Lance can give probably a single response.
As for lacks sincerity and grandstanding, that's bollocks.
In most cases people were sinply asking what happened and hoping for an explanation and the likelihood of a resolution. Lance being away or not, members naturally asked here. It's always been the way. What's grandstanding about that?

Re: Ah, I miss so many of our posts :-(
To those "newbies" and forgetful "vets", some of what was lost during the posts
from the last seven months, was my friend Chalkie's personal and health issues,
which he bravely talked about here. It is not easy to be so honest in public.
As for Lance, he is not an IT guru, he relies on IT gurus like most people, and his
IT guru is the guy that lost the data for want of the classic IT maneuver called
"BACKUP YOUR FILES then proceed with changing the code."
Drowning Lance with PM's on a subject he can't technically talk to is ridiculous.
First of all, he's on vacation in Europe for crying out loud, and secondly, read the
second paragraph. If ya want to fight about it, do it here, not in poor Lance's
PM's, which I'm sure are full nearly any given day without dealing with missing files.

Agreed! Let's not pretend that any of us are here to publish our deathless prose of wisdom. Yes, I've enjoyed reading many posts here, and I continue to be grateful to Lance for providing this platform for discussion.
And along the way I've met many valued friends, among whom I'll pick out Chalkie for the moment - bot for the way he's kept us posted on the progress of Kevin, the wounded warrior, and the way he's offered to be helpful to CMG. I certainly hope that his and Starr's health problems are a matter of the past, and that we can look forward to his usual helpful and vluable participation.
And if I've left out my other great friends for the moment, you know who you are!
I takle it that the problems the site has encountered is an IT problem. Not many among us are IT gurus - certainly not I - but I hope that through this transition our old friendshipe and associations will continue to grow.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Lance for making this website available for our enjoyment.
I don't feel any sense of loss from the fact that my posts have been lost in the maze of the internet and never felt that my comments were more than what they were, hardly worthy of such value that their disappearance troubles me.
Again, I'm sorry to see that Lance is apparently the target for some frustrated contributors and hope that he'll be back soon and continue to do what I consider to be a fine service for all of us who participate in this forum.
Let's move on, please.

May I add my thanks to Lance and wish him a great vacation now that the site is up

Chalkie's repeatedly threatened to leave, but he still posts now and then, so I hope he's still with us. He's told us that he has serious health problems to work through, and these had already cut down his participation, but when he's better, maybe he'll get up to speed again.

Actually it's quite likely-he reversed on Caballe-while she's great and he finally saw the light, in the long run Meyerbeer's operas are an even greater more unique achievement and I'm confident he'll come around. Lance didn't realize it, his techie didn't realize it, and neither did anybody else. They assumed the ISP's automated backup system was working and actually making backups, as it did until early this year. Some, notably Chalkie, did indeed recommend making an additional backup as fail-safe against the system's failure, and now we know it would have been better if their recommendations had been heeded. Maybe they will be now.karlhenning wrote:Well, those who realized that no back-up was being made, gave advice on that head which was disregarded.

You know it's a pity--I was out there in Cooperstown for the superb Medea and it wouldn't have taken me that long to get to Binghamton--I'm sure Lance and me working together could have gotten this straightened out! Regards, Len
