Some of those are very good indeed, especially the concertos with Nathan Milstein. Others I don't know, but I expect they're at least honest and well played. Well recorded too. But who would buy 20 CDs of mostly standard repertoire just because it's conducted by William Steinberg?

I would - especially if I could get it for 13.19 pounds with free shipping from Amazon UK. [That price has now changed last time I checked].

At around $1 a disc I will not be too dissapointed if there is the odd recording that doesn't grab me.

No, too much standard repertoire. The Handley/Mackerras boxes seems more interesting.

Agreed that at that price point I'd check it out (the Beethoven/Brahms vn concerti disc would be a duplicate for me).

At Amazon US it's yet to be released, and prices at northward of $90. So I shall pass.

Cheers,

Don't be fooled by the early recording dates listed: these are stereo recordings made on 35mm magnetic film made on the same recorders used by Mercury and Everest in the same period and released on Command Classics: very fine indeed. Steinberg/Pittsburgh were a first-rate ensemble of the era: some of that orchestra's best-ever recordings are included here (Remember, Steinberg briefly took over Boston before his untimely demise.).

Stoutly recommended, especially at the bargain price.

This looks like a great box for a much neglected conductor, especially since his death. Several of the original Capitol recordings have been reissued previously on CD. I had the pleasure of hearing Steinberg conduct the Pittsburgh on several occasions. He was a man whose conductorial gestures were not flamboyant but who had superb control over his orchestra. This will be a great Icon box to have. I note EMI/Icon has just added new boxes for Vernon Handley and Charles Mackerras as well.

I saw Steinberg with both the Boston and Pittsburgh Orchestras. He was a very fine maestro who deserves this belated tribute. Highly recommended. 8)

P.S. I have most of those Icon recordings on older CDs. So, I know his discography, too. The Icon box is a steal. Get it, my friend.
