Die Meisterwerke of the Mann From Hanau

A coming concert will feature MATHIS DER MALER, which WSMR-FM identifies as THE masterpiece of Hindemith.
Did PH peak that early in his career?

Are they talking about the complete opera , which is rarely performed , or the much more familiar
Mathis Der Maler symphony drawn from it ? The opera and symphony date from the 30s, about halfway through
Hindemith's life. The opera is definitely one of his greatest works.
The only staging in New York so far was by the New York City opera in the mid 90s. These were the last performances by the late ,lamented Christopher Keene, who unfortunately died of AIDS shortly after .
The Met should definitely do Mathis , possibly with Bryn Terfel or Thomas Hampson in the title role,
possibly with Thielemann conducting .

The symphony.
'tis not the first time the hosts of the all-classical station have said something dubious. Years ago one of them actually called the strictly average Holst the third of the Hs.
