Opinions sought on Philippe Herreweghe's Bach recordings.

Post by Seán » Thu Mar 01, 2012 2:55 am

A Herreweghe set of Bach recordings will be released on the 5th March 2012

I'm certainly tempted to buy it, do you have an opinion on this set?

I, for one, rate them highly. I'm in the awkward situation of owning enough of them already that it doesn't make sense to get the set.

I have a three disc set and love them. If you want to try before you buy you can find a few (complete) cantatas conducted by Herreweghe on YouTube which should give you an idea of his style.

Oh, that's your solution for everything.

I am in somewhat the same situation as nut-job. In my days of catch-as-catch-can collecting of cantatas I only never got a complete set by one performing force because it was never anything other than a great expense spread out over a long period of time as one awaited the next release. Now it seems pointless to add another collection to what I already have. But if completeness is significant in any large body of one composer's music, it is in the Bach cantatas, so if a good one can be had at a reasonable price, might as well get it over with. :)

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Seán, I could not get your UK-Amazon link to open up. Can you double check it for us? I haven't collected anything much by Herreweghe. It will be interesting to read the comments here.

Lance, that's strange, here it is:

I will get this set as I do not have very many Bach recordings, only a few cantatas and no performances by Herreweghe.

Thank you, Seán ... this time it opened up fine. Looks like a great set, the Herreweghe. I think you will greatly enjoy it. I'm holding off a while on this one. What we need is another two lifetimes! :(

I agree Lance, and as we only have the one let's live it to the full then, shall we?

I ordered it Sean even though I have a lot of the recordings already. I figured that I will sell the individual CDs I have at some stage and make most of the money back.

Overall I find PH to have a more blended, smoother sound than many HIP performers and I look towards Koopman's recordings for a contrasting interpretation.

BTW I don't know if this does include all his Harmonia Mundi Bach recordings because I am sure he recorded the SJP [different editions] and SMP twice for the label and I can only see one recording of each listed.

Best,
Justin

Sean:

Thanks so much for the heads-up! I've been waiting for this to happen. The set is now on my want-list at MDT for $66.00 (ex-VAT).

Here's one of the aforementioned YouTube videos giving a sampling of Herreweghe's Cantatas.

EDIT: I was unable to make the video embed properly. Here's a link.
