RCA Living Stereo 60 CD Collection Box Coming In December

Post by stenka razin » Mon Oct 15, 2012 9:45 am

Great news fellow CMGERs! Living Stereo is back in a brand new super budget box. If you are familiar with Living Stereeo, nothing else need be written. If not, run don't walk till you obtain these supurb recordings, before they are gone. The price should be around $100 but, I am certain you will be able to purchase this set for much less.

Any comments? Any favorites?

Looks like a great set! Fortunately, I've already got the ones I want. Highly recommended, especially the Reiner and Anna Moffo issues! I'm sorry not to see Van Cliburn's Beethoven IV, an old favorite.

Mel, is this a new printing of the same box that was out previously or an entirely new box?

Why would RCA repeat the same box?

There must be other Living Stereo items they could have used...... :(

If it's coming back in circulation, that is good news. Amazon.ca has this box at $471.99, which is what happens when one of these boxes goes out of print. (Glenn Gould Original Jacket is over $3700 on Amazon.ca (new). I believe I paid under $200 for a scratch and dent.)

There are similar 50 CD boxes from Mercury Living Presence, DECCA and now a new one Original Jacket 55 CD box from Philips.

And an original jacket box offering a 40 year retrospective of Murray Perahia.

Thanks to you, Mel, I was made aware of all these items when I looked up the Living Stereo box.

Quite a lot of these discs have, since the last time it was available, been released in various performer-focused smaller Sony budget boxes; like Reiner's Strauss, Munch etc, and I guess much of it will appear in future releases. Since I've bought a few of those already I guess I'll pass.

Right, Vol II is the big deal now, I think. Vol. I, by the way, has had a big price drop at Import CDs, down to sixty-something dollars! I'm going to get a set for my Chinese teacher.

One problem with Vol II, for those who have the Reiner set and the Rubinstein set--lots of repeats :(

For the last year, these various box sets are cheaper on amazon.ca than on amazon.com. Sometimes they are released sooner on amazon.ca. Usually the opposite has been the case, products cost more in Canada than in US, and usually released later and sometimes not at all. So this is a very desirable state of affairs, IMO.
So, do check amazon.ca if purchasing any of these sets. Shipping costs may offset savings for non-Canadians.

Sigh. I haven't opened my big Rubinstein box yet, and have only watched the Winterreise DVD from the Perahia box, but I couldn't help myself. I ordered this from Import CDs today. Thanks for the heads up...

I'll probably pass on this one as well. I have most of the material on CD already. I'm sure there is some sentimentality in the RCA Living Stereo boxes ... so many of us grew up with those on LPs and on CD reissues. Most of the pricing for these reissues is in creating the printed material, all in colour, plus the box. I suppose the CDs have already been issued and are simply duplicated for this presentation.

The REINER boxed set is precious, indeed. I'm only sorry they did not include ALL of his Columbia and RCA recordings that were NOT with the Chicago Symphony. A sequel is due!

The Living Stereo Vol. 2 follows the Original Jackets format and also provides the original LP issue numbers. I thought this might be an opportunity to issue some items that hadn't appeared on CD (like Daniel Shafran's recording of the Schubert "Arpeggione" sonata) but it doesn't look that way as there are holes in the numbering beyond those that were licensed from Decca.

I think I'll ass on this one as well.
