Thanks for the list. I've passed it along to a broadcaster friend in case he wants to do a year-end tribute program, like the segment every year in CBS's Sunday Morning.

Anybody want to bet that Sunday Morning remembers Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau? In the Charles Kuralt days it would have been a sure thing, but in the current populist (i.e. dumbed down) Sunday Morning, the only one on the list who might get a mention is Elliott Carter, and that only because of his age.

Thank you, Lance. The internet has a way of multiplying tributes and entries for a mere handful of composers, conductors and musicians and of neglecting many others. For the time being, I'll draw your attention to Marvin Hamlisch who was a "pop concert" conductor for several good orchestras. He is also credited for a number of film music compositions, such as The Sting, in the style of, or drawn from, Scott Joplin.

A Portuguese composer, better known in Europe than in the Americas: Emmanuel Nunes.
Emmanuel Nunes (31 August 1941 - 2 September 2012)
He is on youtube and, while his compositions will strike members as being highly "dissonant" or "angular," his "Esquisses" exert some kind of hypnotic effect on my ears:

Dave Brubeck.

I know, not "classical", but polytonality, so he counts.

A student of Kagel and Messiaen, Théo Brandmuller:
Theo Brandmüller (2 February 1948, Mainz - 26 November 2012, Saarbrücken) was a German contemporary classical composer, organist and teacher.

Brandmüller studied composition with Giselher Klebe, Mauricio Kagel, Cristobal Halffter and Olivier Messiaen, and the organ with Gaston Litaize.

He was elected as Professor of Composition at the Hochschule für Musik Saar in 1979. His pupils included the composers Marc Schubring and Karola Obermüller, and the organist Dan Zerfaß.

Roman Totenberg (1 January 1911 – 8 May 2012) was a Polish-American violinist and educator.
(toured with Arthur Rubenstein and gave concerts with Szymanowski)

Charles Anthony Caruso (né Calogero Antonio Caruso; July 15, 1929 – February 15, 2012).
(holds the record for the number of performances at the Met)

Evelyn Lear (January 8, 1926 – July 1, 2012) was an American operatic soprano.
(known for her successful Richard Strauss performances)

Also, if classical music critics are included, as was done in previous years:

Donal Henahan (February 28, 1921[1] – August 19, 2012) was an American music critic and journalist who had lengthy associations with the Chicago Daily News and The New York Times.

Piston included on this list:

"Donal Henahan (February 28, 1921[1] – August 19, 2012) was an American music critic and journalist who had lengthy associations with the Chicago Daily News and The New York Times."

Not fondly remembered by this, or more most other musicians I know. And I have no qualms about saying so.

It's a bit surprising considering where I live, but I totally missed Hans Werner Henze's death. A real shame; he was composing wonderful music until the last couple of years. There was a large retrospective of his work in the framework of the Ruhrgebiet's yearlong celebration as European Cultural Capital in 2010. I saw some great concerts that year.
Du sollst schlechte Compositionen weder spielen, noch, wenn du nicht dazu gezwungen bist, sie anhören.
