Alsop at Rio's "City of the Arts"

Post by piston » Sat Oct 05, 2013 8:13 am

The Cidade da Musica, renamed Cidade das Artes because of Brazil's mass movement for more social equality in response to financially extravagant development projects and perceived elitism, has finally become operational after two years of being a cidade sem musica -- a city without music (the project was completed in 2011) Its fiirst major classical music concert, in late August, saw American conductor M. Alsop lead the Sao Paulo orchestra in a program that included Guarneri's fourth symphony, "Brasilia," and Mahler's "Titan." The audience was very enthusiastic, applauding between movements and, God forbid, during a Mahler movement.

It is the largest art center in South America, with a 1780-seat capacity, and also includes a chamber music hall, 3 theatres, and 12 rehearsal rooms. The building, designed by French architect Christian de Portzamparc, and the project funded by the city cost six times the amount that was originally budgeted.
