Lance's program 14 June 2014: Tribute to Luigi Boccherini

Post by Lance » Fri Jun 13, 2014 2:09 pm

A break from the norm ... a tribute to Luigi Rodolfo Boccherini, 1743-1805. A composer who's little famous "Menuet" from his String Quartet in E Major is a tiny fraction of an enormous output that included symphonies, concertos (many for the cello including the famous one in B-flat), sonatas, overtures, and tons of chamber music, some with piano accompaniment, and vocal music. While born in Italy (Lucca), Boccherini spent considerable time in Spain and was his own man, even with some of his benefactors, enough so that he was fired from one job. (Listen to my program!) I have always been entranced with his myriad Quintets for Guitar and Strings and include one and a section of another. Boccherini is finding his way back to music lovers having seemingly been neglected except for a few pieces.

The Program

•Quintet No. 6 in G Major for Guitar and Strings w/Pepe Romero, guitar; Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble
•Cello Concerto No. 11 in C Major w/Anner Bylsma, cellist, Tafelmusik
•Antique aria: "Infelice ivan mi lagno" w/Adelina Scarabelli, soprano; Sonorum Concentus Roma, Federico Amendola, conductor
•"Fandango" from the Guitar Quintet in D Major w/Pepe Romero, guitar; Tristan Fry, castanets; Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble

The program is heard weekly on the Internet at 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EASTERN time on this link:
