ravel string quartet

Post by lennygoran » Mon Sep 29, 2014 5:43 am

I like to watch Thirteen's PBS NYC Arts each week--this week they played a chamber music work I wasn't familiar with and it caught my fancy--afterwards I went upstairs and sure enough I have it--yep another work I never had time to listen to. :(

I read more about the work at wiki and found its early reception very interesting!

The program included:
"A performance by the Calder Quartet during the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the Avery Fisher Arts Program at Lincoln Center."

Oh, that.... Actually I heard the Calder Quartet perform exactly that work by default at the Lake Luzerne Festival last summer. (There is a post on the music review board.)

The Ravel Quartet is a childhood memory for me. I have always loved it. Ravel himself was in doubt about its quality and went to none other than Debussy for confirmation. Debussy told him not to change a single note. I have had musical friends of superior accomplishment who dismiss it, but I don't understand that, any more than you, Len, understand why I don't quite get Donizetti. It is a masterpiece, and I am delighted that you have been introduced to it.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Thanks-yes, quite enjoyable and watching the expressions on the faces of the players was fun--they exhibited more expressions than you find at some operas! Regards, Len :)

Try the Hollywood String Quartet, just like their Schubert Quintet it has never been bettered...

Here's the very first recording of it, given the composer's personal sanction:

Good music is that which falls upon the ear with ease, and quits the memory with difficulty.

I never tire of this quartet. In fact, it's probably the string quartet to which I've listened to more times than any other work in the form. A "desert island" piece for me, certainly.

Yes. Along with the Debussy, and the Brahms Piano Quartets.
